Lingea

Lingea is a Czech publishing house and language-technology company based in Brno. Founded in 1997, it focuses on Czech and foreign-language dictionaries, grammar guides, conversation handbooks, and language software. The company operates across the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, and Serbia, and its titles cover languages from all continents. Lingea is known for its Lingea Lexicon electronic dictionaries and for developing language tools such as lemmatizers, spell checkers, and hyphenation tools that are integrated into many editors and applications. It also collaborates on research and development projects in language, translation, and speech technologies with Masaryk University and Brno University of Technology. In addition to foreign-language materials, Lingea publishes Czech-language reference works and runs the Czech-language portal Nechybujte.cz. Its dictionaries have received multiple awards in the Dictionary of the Year competition organized by the Union of Interpreters and Translators.

Lingea was founded in 1997 in Brno, Czech Republic. In its early years, the company concentrated on developing its own electronic dictionaries under the Lingea Lexicon brand. Over time, it expanded into book publishing, releasing general, specialized, and explanatory dictionaries, grammar overviews, conversation guides, and travel phrasebooks. Throughout its existence, Lingea has also developed language tools such as lemmatizers, spell checkers, and automatic hyphenation, which are embedded in many editors and applications. The company participates in research and development projects in language, translation, and speech technologies in cooperation with Masaryk University and Brno University of Technology. By 2014, Lingea's titles covered all continents, with full dictionary ranges for English, German, French, Russian, Spanish, and Italian, and smaller dictionaries and grammar guides for other frequent European and Asian languages. Conversation guides with mini-dictionaries exist for all processed languages, and selected titles are available in Slovak, Polish, Romanian, and Hungarian editions. Smaller dictionaries for 30 languages are available online, and Lingea's dictionary database is used by the translation pages of the Seznam.cz browser. In addition to foreign-language publications, Lingea publishes Czech-language reference works, from explanatory dictionaries to spelling rules and grammar overviews, and operates the Czech-language portal Nechybujte.cz. Lingea's dictionaries have won multiple awards in the Dictionary of the Year competition organized by the Union of Interpreters and Translators, including recognition in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012, and 2013.
