Overview

Limmatdruck Zeiler AG was a Swiss printing company headquartered in Spreitenbach. It was formed in 2000 through the merger of Limmatdruck AG, which belonged to the Migros-Genossenschafts-Bund (MGB), and Zeiler AG of Köniz. The company specialised in food packaging, particularly folding cartons, and supported the entire value chain from design and online management to production using its own developed packaging machines. Until 1991, Limmatdruck AG also printed Migros press products, including the weekly Migros-Magazin with a circulation of more than two million copies and the daily newspaper Die Tat. In 2011, MGB sold the company to the rlc packaging group, and it has since been a subsidiary of that group. The company is currently in liquidation.

History

Limmatdruck Zeiler AG was a Swiss printing company based in Spreitenbach. It was created in 2000 from the merger of Limmatdruck AG, which belonged to the Migros-Genossenschafts-Bund (MGB), and Zeiler AG, which had existed since 1930 in Köniz. In 2011, MGB sold the company, and it became a subsidiary of the rlc packaging group. The company is currently in liquidation. The company mainly produced food packaging and was particularly known for folding cartons. It supported all processes of the value chain from design to online management to production using specially developed packaging machines. Until 1991, Limmatdruck AG also printed Migros press products, including the weekly Migros-Magazin with a circulation of more than two million copies and the daily newspaper Die Tat. Limmatdruck: Migros founder Gottlieb Duttweiler published Die Tat from 1935, initially as a weekly publication of his party, the Landesring der Unabhängigen, and from 1939 as a daily newspaper. It was printed in the former university printing house in Zurich, the City-Druckerei near St. Peter's Church. Soon, however, it became apparent that its capacity would no longer be sufficient for Wir Brückenbauer and Construire, the planned German- and French-language free weekly newspapers of the Migros cooperative members. In 1941, the Migros-Genossenschafts-Bund (MGB) therefore set up its own printing house at its headquarters at Limmatstrasse 152 for all its publications. In 1945 it received the name Genossenschaft zur Limmat and moved to a larger building at Limmatplatz 4–6 in 1951/52. With the steadily increasing number of Migros cooperative members in the 1950s and 1960s, the circulation of Wir Brückenbauer and Construire also rose sharply, which is why a considerable part of the printing order had to be awarded to other companies. In 1976, the changeover from machine typesetting to phototypesetting took place. At that time, MGB also planned to convert Die Tat into a tabloid, which made another solution necessary. To enable the significantly higher circulation and four-colour printing, a new printing house was built in Spreitenbach in a short time, Limmatdruck AG. It began operations in April 1977. Despite the abrupt discontinuation of Die Tat in September 1978, the printing house remained fully utilised. After its founding in 1925, Migros was confronted with supply boycotts by food manufacturers, which is why it began producing food itself as early as 1928. It also initially struggled with boycotts in packaging, as packaging material manufacturers temporarily stopped supplying cardboard boxes. For this reason, Duttweiler founded the Genossenschaft Sabina in Zurich in 1931, which also offered jobs for partially disabled people. In 1968, Sabina transferred part of its production to the Zentralpackerei Birsfelden, also part of Migros, and in 1980 it was absorbed into Limmatdruck AG. In 1991, the MGB administration decided to have Migros press products printed by external companies in the future, as replacing the outdated rotary printing presses was too expensive. This resulted in the dismissal of 60 employees, leaving only the printing of magazines and packaging material in Spreitenbach. Zeiler: Zeiler AG was founded in 1930 in Köniz. The family business specialised in packaging printing and, among other things, produced packaging for Ricola and Halter Bonbons for decades, as well as boxes for Nespresso capsules. The company also gained supra-regional fame as a long-time sponsor of the volleyball club Volley Köniz. In 2000, Zeiler AG had 180 employees and generated annual sales of more than 40 million Swiss francs. On 8 September of the same year, Limmatdruck AG took over Zeiler AG, which continued to operate under its own name. Together, the two companies generated annual sales of 112 million Swiss francs in 2010 with 400 employees. On 8 July 2011, MGB announced that Limmatdruck and Zeiler had been sold to the rlc packaging group retroactively to 1 July. MGB gave the reason that packaging printing was no longer one of Migros's core tasks. MGB and rlc agreed to remain silent about the sale price. As a result, both Limmatdruck and Zeiler were affected by job cuts, caused by the overvaluation of the franc and overcapacity in the industry. In December 2018, the management of the rlc packaging group decided to completely abandon production in Köniz and to dismiss the majority of the workforce.
