Overview
Liga lidských práv (League of Human Rights) is a Czech non-governmental organization and watchdog that monitors human rights compliance and advocates for systemic changes improving quality of life in the Czech Republic. It drafts and comments on legislative changes, writes shadow reports for international bodies, provides legal aid to victims of serious rights violations, and runs a free legal advice service. The organization separated in 2002 from the partner legal organization Ekologický právní servis, building on earlier work by its founders who organized the Civic Legal Patrols project monitoring protests against the 2000 IMF and World Bank meetings. It has been a member of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) since 2004. Liga lidských práv focuses on human rights in healthcare, education, and police conduct, and is one of the best-known human rights organizations in the Czech Republic. Its work includes strategic litigation, advocacy for systemic legislative change, educational seminars and lectures, free online legal counseling, and publishing legal manuals. Key topics include patients' rights through the Férová nemocnice (Fair Hospital) project, rights of people with disabilities in cooperation with the Mental Disability Advocacy Center (MDAC), police conduct and the right to assembly, access to justice, inclusive education through the Férová škola (Fair School) project, and the rights of children in institutional care. Notable successes include obtaining apologies and compensation for beaten participants of CzechTek 2005 and helping women subjected to unauthorized sterilizations gain compensation.
History
Liga lidských práv separated in 2002 from the partner legal organization Ekologický právní servis. Its founders had earlier organized the Civic Legal Patrols project, which monitored protests against the 2000 meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. In spring 2004, Liga lidských práv became a member of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH). Through cooperation with the Mental Disability Advocacy Center (MDAC), the organization began addressing patients' rights in healthcare. A year later, its lawyers defended participants of the dispersed CzechTek event. As its membership base of permanent and external collaborators expanded, the topics it addressed also broadened. Currently, Liga lidských práv focuses on the rights of children, patients, and people with disabilities, as well as the judiciary and police conduct.
