Overview
Lichtmeß-Kino is a repertory cinema (Programmkino) located at Gaußstraße 25 in the Ottensen district of Hamburg, Germany. It was founded by an initiative of students from the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (Hamburg University of Fine Arts) and opened on 2 February 1991, the feast of Mariä Lichtmeß (Candlemas), from which the cinema takes its name — although no religious connection was intended. The founding members included Lothar Leininger, Christof Brüggemann, Ute Holl, Mehmet Alatur, Herbert Müller, Jutta Hercher, René Schöttler, Carsten Knoop and Dorit Kiesewetter. Carsten Knoop, who has worked as a projectionist at Hamburg's Metropolis Kino since the 1990s, continues to run Lichtmeß together with his wife Dorit Kiesewetter in the Seifensiederhalle of the former Georg Dralle perfume and soap works. The premises were initially provided rent-free by the Ottensener Werkhof. The cinema is operated by Lichtmeß e.V., a registered association for the promotion of video and film art. Its programming focuses on films outside the mainstream, such as rare experimental, documentary and short films, which are usually shown on Thursdays. It also serves as a venue for school screenings, premieres and film festivals including the Kurzfilm Festival, Dokumentarfilmwoche Hamburg and the Deepwave Festival. Lichtmeß-Kino is a regular recipient of the Kinopreis der Stadt Hamburg (Hamburg City Cinema Prize) for outstanding film programming and other measures promoting cinema culture. The venue has a single auditorium with 90 seats. Its fixed screen measures 4 × 2.4 m (9.6 m²), with additional mobile screens available. The cinema is equipped with a wide range of projection technology capable of handling all common media. Its analogue equipment includes two Bauer B-11 35 mm projectors and a Bauer Selecton 16 mm projector with various sound and lens options, an Elmo GS-1200 Super-8, a Bell & Howell Normal-8 projector and other film projectors for 8, 16 and 35 mm. For digital playback it has Christie 2210, Doremi DCP-2K4 and Panasonic DLP 6710 Full HD video projectors. It also has players for VHS, S-VHS, U-matic, Betacam SP, Digital Betacam, Video-8, Hi8, Digital-8, Digital Video, DVD-Video and Blu-ray Disc in PAL and NTSC. The sound system consists of a Dolby CP 650 audio processor with Dolby-A, SR and Digital.
