History

Lice Clinics of America (LCA) was created to make the swift return to normal life possible after a head lice infestation, aiming to empower parents, school personnel, medical professionals and other caregivers with a safe, fast and effective head lice treatment. Its treatment uses the AirAllé device, which uses heated air rather than toxic chemicals to dehydrate head lice. The concept of treating head lice with heated air originated in the laboratory of Dr. Dale Clayton at the University of Utah, where he is a professor in the Department of Biology. While researching the biology of birds and their feather lice in 1996, Dr. Clayton found it difficult to keep lice cultures alive due to Utah's arid climate; around the same time his own elementary school-aged children contracted head lice that appeared resistant to chemical shampoos, prompting him to seek a more effective method using dry, warm air. He ultimately found that a combination of heat and considerable airflow is required to desiccate the lice, and that conventional blow dryers do not work well because they tend to mat the hair and have wide temperature swings.
