Liberty Theatre

The Liberty Theatre is a theater in Astoria, Oregon, USA. Initially built in 1925, it underwent a first stage of restoration completed in 2006, with the Theatre reopening for business in April 2005. A second phase of renovations was completed in 2020, adding a fully-functional concessions stand and a brand-new box office, enclosing the vestibule in glass, and converting much of the Theatre to LED. The restoration has impacted the economic development of downtown Astoria, and the venue hosts events and performances.

The Liberty Theatre was initially built in 1925. The first stage of its restoration was completed in 2006, with the Theatre reopening for business in April 2005. In 2020, the second phase of renovations was completed, adding a fully-functional concessions stand and a brand-new box office; the vestibule was enclosed in glass, and much of the Theatre was converted to LED to lower operating costs. The restoration has dramatically impacted the economic development of downtown Astoria, serving as a magnet for commercial activity, professional firms, and a revitalized downtown. The rehabilitation of this key property has provided a positive example for other building owners, and since its reopening it has brought hundreds of thousands of visitors and residents to downtown Astoria. Outside of Portland or Salem, no other 1920s vintage motion picture palace in Oregon was restored to its original decorative architecture. School children in four local school districts have had a venue for arts enrichment and education and a theatre to showcase student productions, and the Liberty has enabled various active performing arts programs during school vacations.
