History

The Libertad Verlag was founded in late 1976 in the former Berlin workers' district of Neukölln, in the immediate wake of the 1968 youth revolt. Its founders came from the anarchist pupil and apprentice movement. In January, the first issue of the brochure series 'anarchistische texte' appeared, containing Mikhail Bakunin's 'Freiheit und Sozialismus'. Up to 1988, 34 issues appeared in this series. Besides the popular brochures, the publisher soon brought out books, including 'Der Anarchismus' by Paul Eltzbacher and the first German translation of 'Betrifft: Anarchismus' by Nicolas Walter. Later, the paperback series 'Edition Schwarze Kirschen' was founded, and in 1987 the book series 'Archiv für Sozial- und Kulturgeschichte' followed. The publisher is now based in Potsdam.
