Overview

LG Stadtwerke München is a non-profit athletics community (Leichtathletik-Gemeinschaft) based in Munich, Germany. It is not a conventional single club but a cooperative umbrella under which ten Munich-area athletics clubs pool their competitive resources. The organisation describes itself as one of the most significant athletics clubs in Germany, with an undisputed leading position in the Free State of Bavaria and a top national standing. Its athletes compete at European and World Championships across age groups as well as at the Olympic Games. The community was founded in 1987 by three Munich clubs. In 2007 five further clubs joined and Stadtwerke München, the municipal utility company, came on board as a major sponsor, giving the organisation its current name. Today the member clubs include PSV München, TS Jahn München, TSV Forstenried, TSV Milbertshofen, TSV München-Ost, USC München, Werfer-Club 95 München, 1. SC Gröbenzell, MRRC München, LFZ München and Athletik- und Sprintteam München. LG Stadtwerke München combines elite performance with broad grassroots provision. It develops talent from Munich and the region towards national and international level, while also offering the basic movement forms of running, jumping and throwing to sports enthusiasts of all ages. Its stated aim is to be there for all Munich residents — pupils and stars, students and seniors, Olympians and hobby champions. The club's competitive record includes international medals and records. At the U20 World Championships in Eugene, Clara Hegemann won the hammer throw title with 68.99 metres. Sprinter Maximilian Rath broke the German U18 5,000-metre best time at a meeting in Oordegem, Belgium, by 23 seconds. Three LG-SWM athletes — Luisa Tremel, Thilo Traue and Georg Harpf — were named to the German national team for the 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. The organisation is led by a president and two vice-presidents, supported by an office team. Its public activities include the Münchner Kindl Cup for U8 to U12 athletes, reflecting its commitment to youth development alongside elite competition.

History

LG Stadtwerke München was founded in 1987 as LG München by three Munich athletics clubs. The model was a Leichtathletik-Gemeinschaft — an athletics community in which several independent clubs combine their competitive teams under one umbrella while retaining their own identities. This structure allowed smaller clubs to compete at a higher level than any of them could alone. In 2007 the community expanded significantly: five additional clubs joined, and Stadtwerke München, the municipal utility company of the city of Munich, became a major sponsor. The organisation was renamed LG Stadtwerke München to reflect this partnership. Today the member clubs are PSV München, TS Jahn München, TSV Forstenried, TSV Milbertshofen, TSV München-Ost, USC München, Werfer-Club 95 München, 1. SC Gröbenzell, MRRC München, LFZ München and Athletik- und Sprintteam München. Over the following years LG Stadtwerke München established itself as one of the most successful athletics communities in Germany. It developed an undisputed leading position in Bavaria and a top national standing, sending athletes to European and World Championships in all age categories and to the Olympic Games. Its athletes have included high jumper Tobias Potye, sprinter Yannick Wolf, middle-distance runner Christina Hering, hammer thrower Merlin Hummel and 400-metre runner Kamghe Gaba. More recent successes include Clara Hegemann's gold medal in the hammer throw at the U20 World Championships in Eugene with 68.99 metres, and Maximilian Rath's German U18 record over 5,000 metres at the international meeting in Oordegem, Belgium, where he improved the previous best by 23 seconds. In 2026 three LG-SWM athletes — Luisa Tremel, Thilo Traue and Georg Harpf — were selected for the German team at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. Alongside elite sport, the community runs broad participation programmes. It offers the basic movement forms of running, jumping and throwing to Munich residents of all ages and organises events such as the Münchner Kindl Cup for U8 to U12 athletes. The organisation is led by President Jacob Minah, Vice Presidents Faliero Graiani (performance sport) and Elisabeth Hafenrichter (youth), and Managing Director Christina Hering.
