Overview

Les Papeteries NIAS is a Belgian stationery retailer with roots dating back to 1845, when Charles NIAS began trading in stationery and school supplies in central Brussels. Over the following decades the business expanded and moved several times within Brussels, and in the late 19th century it developed a register-manufacturing workshop whose numbered custom-register system earned the house the nickname "La Maison du Registre". The company also has historical ties to Liège through the Imprimerie Liégeoise Poncelet (1865) and the Imprimerie Papeterie Librairie (1880), which were later grouped under the same retail identity. Today Les Papeteries NIAS operates as a multi-channel stationery retailer under the banner "Les Papeteries NIAS & IPL". Its product range covers office supplies, school and art materials, luxury writing instruments and leather goods, and diaries and calendars. The online shop at les-papeteries.be sells brands such as Legami, Lamy, Uni-ball, Montblanc, Caran d'Ache, Pelikan, Kroll, Brepols, Exacompta, Staedtler and Clairefontaine, spanning everyday school items to high-end limited-edition pens. The company runs physical papeteries in Brussels, Waterloo and Liège. Beyond retail, it offers services including school-list preparation, book and notebook covering, and repair of writing instruments and leather goods. Customers can submit school lists by email or order online for store pickup or delivery. The business remains privately held and is not listed on a stock exchange.

History

The history of Les Papeteries NIAS begins in 1845, when Charles NIAS started a stationery and school-supply business in central Brussels, first on Rue Coppens and from 1856 on Rue Royale. He observed that demand peaked during the holiday period, because institutional clients such as schools, boarding establishments and convents placed their orders then for delivery at the start of the school year. At that time the business traded as "Charles Nias & Fils". In 1865 the Imprimerie Liégeoise Poncelet (ILP) was created on Rue des Clarisses in Liège, and in 1880 the Imprimerie Papeterie Librairie (IPL) was established at Place Saint Jacques, representing the Liège stationery and printing strand of the business. In 1885, anticipating that commercial activity was shifting toward the lower part of the city, Charles NIAS moved the Brussels business to 59 Rue Neuve, into the building that had previously housed the Hôtel de New York. Toward the end of the 19th century he set up a register-manufacturing workshop. Its innovation was to archive the characteristics of each customised register by assigning it a number, so that the same register could be reordered years later without difficulty — an early forerunner of barcode-style identification. It was in this period that the name "La Maison du Registre" became associated with the business. In 1895 the building on Rue des Clarisses was purchased and combined with the Rue Saint Remy premises, creating a single entity: Imprimerie et Papeterie (Imprimerie Papeterie Librairie). At that time deliveries for the City of Liège were made by handcart. Between 1896 and 1926 the business changed its name several times and several members of the NIAS family succeeded one another in its management; during this period the stationery business was known as "Nias Frères", among other names. In the modern era the company operates as Les Papeteries NIAS & IPL, with papeteries in Brussels, Waterloo and Liège and an online shop. Its current offer spans office supplies, school and art materials, luxury writing instruments and leather goods, and diaries and calendars, and it provides services such as school-list preparation, book and notebook covering, and repair of writing instruments and leather goods.
