Overview

Les Pérégrines is a French independent publishing house based in Paris. It was founded in 1987 as Éditions François Bourin by the publisher François Bourin, son of the medieval historian and novelist Jeanne Bourin and of André Bourin, a literary critic, writer and former president of the Prix Renaudot. In March 2021 the house changed its name to Éditions Les Pérégrines, a name inspired by the title of the novel Les Pérégrines (1989), the first literary publication of the house, written by Jeanne Bourin. The company describes itself as a general-interest publisher that mainly releases literature, essays and documents. Its catalogue is organised into several collections, including "Icônes", "Petits éloges", "GENRE!", "Les Audacieux" and "Romans". According to its official website, the house works with 356 authors, maintains 7 collections and has 210 works in print. Its editorial line is expressed in its own words: "Nous publions des romans audacieux, des essais incarnés et des trajectoires inspirantes pour réveiller nos sociétés" (We publish bold novels, embodied essays and inspiring trajectories to awaken our societies). The name itself is glossed on the site as meaning "to travel freely from one place to another, to take unexpected roads, to journey, to dream." Among its recent titles are short essays in the "Petits éloges" collection (for example Petit éloge de l'île de Ré, Petit éloge de la course cycliste, Petit éloge de la fête, Petit éloge des nuages, Petit éloge du tatouage, Petit éloge des anti-héroïnes de séries, Petit éloge du feu de cheminée, Petit éloge de l'imagination, Petit éloge des cocktails, Petit éloge de mon chien, Petit éloge de la procrastination), as well as biographical or thematic essays in the "Icônes" collection devoted to figures such as Robert-Houdin, Garnier (Laurent Garnier), Casanova, Federer, Bovary, Hemingway, Woolf, Bardot, Valadon, Nietzsche, Ono and Davis. Other recent publications include Séverine, Agricultrices, Seconde main, Enfin silence, L'envers de la tech and Voir sans voir. The house is headquartered in Paris, in the 11th arrondissement. It became independent in 2002 after having belonged to the groupe de la Cité from 1994. In 2016 the founder François Bourin took over its management together with his niece Aude Chevrillon. The publishing house is associated with Aude Chevrillon, Alice Peuvot and François Roche. It remains a private, independent French publisher.

History

The publishing house was founded in 1987 by François Bourin under the name Éditions François Bourin. François Bourin is the son of Jeanne Bourin, a medieval historian and novelist, and of André Bourin, a literary critic, writer and former president of the Prix Renaudot. In its early years the house published authors such as Jeanne Bourin, Michel Serres, Jacques Testard and Alain Etchegoyen. Its first literary publication was the novel Les Pérégrines (1989) by Jeanne Bourin, whose title would later inspire the house's new name. In 1994 the Éditions François Bourin joined the groupe de la Cité. It regained its independence in 2002 and went on to publish authors such as Marc Fiorentino, Laurence Benhamou, Charles Gave, Christian Saint-Étienne, Philippe Chalmin, Patrice Romain (author of Mots d'excuse) and the Chinese writer Jiang Rong, author of the best-seller Le Totem du Loup. In 2016 François Bourin, the founder, took over the management of the house together with his niece, Aude Chevrillon. The house is a general-interest publisher that mainly releases literature, essays and documents, while broadening its output through collections such as "Icônes", "Petits éloges" and "GENRE!". François Bourin is notably associated with Aude Chevrillon, Alice Peuvot and François Roche. In February 2021 the Éditions François Bourin became Éditions Les Pérégrines; the change of name was announced in March 2021. The new name is directly inspired by the title of the novel Les Pérégrines (1989), the first literary publication of the house, signed by Jeanne Bourin. Under the Les Pérégrines banner the publisher has continued to develop its collections, including "Petits éloges", "Icônes", "GENRE!", "Les Audacieux" and "Romans", and to release titles such as Bovary by François Aubart (2025), Garnier by Mathilde Ramadier, and Federer by Fabien Lacouture.
