Overview

Les Juntes is a housing cooperative based in the La Florida neighbourhood of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, in the Barcelona metropolitan area of Catalonia, Spain. It promotes an alternative model of housing access built on the collective ownership of land and the cooperative usufruct of dwellings. The initiative is part of the social and solidarity economy movement and aims to guarantee the right to housing, combat real-estate speculation and foster community life. The cooperative emerged in 2024 from the convergence of local organisations including LaFundició, La Dinamo Fundació, Lacol, Coop57, La Florida s'Aveïna, the Associació de Veïns i Veïnes de La Florida and Keras Buti, which had worked for years in the neighbourhood's social fabric. The project consolidated as a response to residential precarity and the need for fairer and more sustainable housing models. Les Juntes opts for a dispersed cooperative housing model: it acquires already-built homes and distributes them across different points of the neighbourhood. These properties are managed by the cooperative, while the land is transferred to a community entity that guarantees collective ownership. The system is inspired by Community Land Trusts, non-profit corporations that hold land on behalf of a local community, and seeks to shield homes from re-entering the speculative market. Beyond providing stable and affordable housing, the cooperative promotes a communal culture that recognises interdependence between people. Les Juntes drives projects related to agroecological food, culture, care and other areas linked to sustaining life. Members have long-term usufruct rights over the dwellings but are not individual owners. Decisions are taken collectively through a shared governance structure that favours democratic participation and community management. The cooperative offers various ways to participate: becoming a collaborating member, making donations, ceding properties or acquiring participatory titles. These options allow the project's social base to expand and its sustainability to be guaranteed. Les Juntes is part of Habicoop, the Federation of Housing Cooperatives of Catalonia, which groups cooperative housing initiatives in the territory. In 2026 it received a bronze medal at the World Habitat Awards 2026, promoted by UN-Habitat with the participation of the Building and Social Housing Foundation, which recognise examples for European governments to address the housing emergency. The award highlighted its work to dignify the right to affordable housing through community organisation, with the collaboration of neighbourhood organisations and cooperatives, as well as collective restoration with people facing social exclusion, residential insecurity, immigration and women in need of housing, among others.
