Overview

Leoben City Shopping, commonly abbreviated LCS, is a shopping centre located in the inner city of Leoben, the second-largest city in the Austrian federal state of Styria. It opened on 3 October 2007 and, following an expansion in 2018, offers more than 25,600 square metres of total sales area. Around 85 stores operate within the centre, employing approximately 800 people. The centre is notable for integrating a former Dominican monastery founded in 1280, which had served as the seat of the Leoben Regional Court from 1850 until the court moved to the newly built Justizzentrum Leoben in 2005. The entire listed monastery complex was renovated and incorporated into the design by architect Hans-Heinrich Brunner, creating what has been described as a unique shopping centre in Europe. Adjacent burgher houses on Hauptplatz (Nos. 19 and 21) and the corner building at Josef-Graf-Gasse/Langgasse were also included. The project was developed by Leoben City Shopping Errichtungs- und Betriebs GmbH, a company in which Cobra Jean Handels-GmbH (owned by entrepreneur Jean-Erich Treu) holds 60%, the City of Leoben 30%, and Treu personally 10%. Construction, costing around 70 million euros, began in May 2006 after extensive archaeological and building-historical preparatory work. The city council approved the development in 2005 against the votes of KPÖ council members. Alongside the opening of the shopping centre, the traffic concept for Leoben's inner city was changed. Anchor tenants include Media Markt, H&M, Kastner & Öhler, Marionnaud Parfumeries and Eurospar. A memorial stele at the east entrance of the LCS commemorates four executions carried out in the courtyard between 1933 and 1938, including that of social democratic workers' leader Koloman Wallisch after the February Uprising.

History

The site of Leoben City Shopping has a long history. A Dominican monastery was founded in Leoben in 1280. From 1850, the former monastery complex in the centre of the city housed the Leoben Regional Court (Landesgericht). In addition to the regional court, the complex also accommodated the Leoben District Court, the Leoben Public Prosecutor's Office and the prison until 1856. The district authority (Bezirkshauptmannschaft) was located here until August 1932, as was the provincial gendarmerie command. Between 1933 and 1938, four executions by strangulation were carried out in the courtyard of the complex, then used by the Leoben Kreisgericht, including that of the social democratic workers' leader Koloman Wallisch after the February Uprising. A memorial stele at the east entrance of the LCS commemorates this. Until the move to the newly built Justizzentrum Leoben, officially opened on 11 March 2005, the presidium and criminal divisions of the Leoben Regional Court, the public prosecutor's office and the Leoben prison were still housed in the Amtsgebäude Dominikanergasse. In 2005, the municipal council of the City of Leoben decided, against the votes of the KPÖ council members, to develop the former Dominican monastery and surrounding areas in the city centre into a shopping centre. Leoben City Shopping Errichtungs- und Betriebs GmbH was founded to build and operate it, with Cobra Jean Handels-GmbH (owned by entrepreneur Jean-Erich Treu) holding 60%, the City of Leoben 30%, and Treu personally 10%. After extensive archaeological and building-historical preparatory work, construction began in May 2006 at a cost of around 70 million euros. The entire listed monastery complex was renovated and integrated into the overall concept by architect Hans-Heinrich Brunner. The integration of the late-medieval mendicant monastery created a shopping centre described as unique in Europe. In addition to the Dominican monastery, adjacent burgher houses on Hauptplatz (Nos. 19 and 21) and the corner house at Josef-Graf-Gasse/Langgasse were also included. The shopping centre opened on 3 October 2007. At the same time, the traffic concept for Leoben's inner city was changed. In 2018, the centre was expanded, bringing its total sales area to over 25,600 square metres. Today around 80 to 85 businesses operate in the LCS, with anchor tenants including Media Markt, H&M, Kastner & Öhler, Marionnaud Parfumeries and Eurospar. Approximately 800 people work in the centre.
