Overview

Lenovo Group Limited is a multinational technology company headquartered in Beijing, with a major global headquarters in Morrisville, North Carolina. It designs, manufactures, markets, and supports personal computers, smartphones, tablets, workstations, servers, storage systems, software, smart devices, and related information-technology services. Its products are sold to consumers, businesses, governments, educational institutions, and other organizations across worldwide markets. The company was established in Beijing in 1984 by engineers associated with the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It initially operated as a technology distribution and development company under the English name Legend, attempting several business activities before concentrating on computers. During its early years, the company distributed foreign technology products in China, developed tools for using Chinese characters on IBM-compatible computers, and gradually began manufacturing and selling computers under its own brand. Legend became a leading computer company in China during the 1990s and listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 1994. A major early consumer success was the Tianxi computer, introduced in 1998. Designed for relatively inexperienced Chinese users, it emphasized simple internet access and was sold with China Telecom connectivity. The product demonstrated Lenovo's ability to combine hardware, software, distribution, and communications services for the domestic market. In 2003, the company changed its international English name from Legend to Lenovo. The new name combined an association with the former Legend identity and the word “novo,” reflecting an effort to build a globally usable brand. The rebranding was supported by a large advertising campaign and marked a strategic shift from a primarily Chinese computer company toward an international technology group. Lenovo's most important international expansion step came in 2005, when it acquired IBM's personal-computer business. The transaction brought the ThinkPad notebook and ThinkCentre desktop businesses, international sales channels, operating capabilities, and experienced personnel into Lenovo. ThinkPad became the company's best-known commercial notebook brand and helped Lenovo establish credibility with corporate and institutional customers outside China. Lenovo subsequently expanded through additional acquisitions, partnerships, and joint ventures. The company formed Lenovo NEC Holdings with NEC in 2011 to strengthen its personal-computer position in Japan. It acquired German electronics company Medion in the same year, expanding its European consumer presence, and purchased Brazilian electronics company Digibras, whose products were sold under the CCE brand, in 2012. In 2014, Lenovo acquired Motorola Mobility from Google, returning to the global smartphone market with an established mobile brand. It also acquired IBM's x86 server business in 2014, broadening its enterprise infrastructure portfolio. Lenovo's principal computer families include ThinkPad and ThinkCentre for commercial users; IdeaPad and IdeaCentre for mainstream consumers; Yoga for convertible and premium consumer devices; and Legion and LOQ for gaming. The company also sells servers, storage, high-performance computing systems, software-defined infrastructure, managed services, and support offerings. Motorola is Lenovo's principal smartphone brand, while Lenovo-branded tablets and smart devices extend its consumer ecosystem. Lenovo became the world's largest personal-computer vendor by unit shipments in 2013, according to the cited reference material, and has continued to compete globally across both devices and infrastructure. Its current positioning combines scale manufacturing and distribution with recognizable premium, commercial, gaming, and mobile sub-brands. The business is international in operations, research, sourcing, sales, and support, while retaining…

History

Lenovo began in Beijing on 1 November 1984 as a company established by engineers connected with the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Liu Chuanzhi and his colleagues initially operated under a lengthy Chinese corporate name and later developed an international presence through Hong Kong. The company first explored televisions and other technology activities, but these efforts were unsuccessful or short-lived. It found a more durable direction in computer distribution, technical services, and the development of tools that enabled Chinese-language computing on IBM-compatible personal computers. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the company built organizational and technical capabilities while moving toward computers under its own brand. It established a Hong Kong subsidiary, raised capital, and began manufacturing and marketing computers. In 1990 it introduced products under its own brand, including the KT8920 mainframe computer. The company became known in English as Legend and benefited from the rapid growth of China's personal-computer market. Legend listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 1994. The offering supplied funds for international sales offices, manufacturing improvements, research and development, and working capital. By the middle of the 1990s it was China's leading PC company. Its product and distribution strategy was adapted to local consumers, and it developed a substantial domestic sales network. The Tianxi computer, launched in 1998, was a notable example. Its simplified internet-access design and telecom-service bundle helped make computing more accessible to inexperienced users and became one of the company's strongest early consumer successes. In 2000, Legend completed a further share offering to support growth. As the company sought to expand beyond China, its existing English name presented international registration and brand-recognition problems because “Legend” was widely used by other businesses. In 2003, it adopted Lenovo as its international name. The rebrand was accompanied by an extensive advertising effort and repositioned the company as a global rather than solely domestic computer manufacturer. The defining international turning point came in 2005, when Lenovo acquired IBM's personal-computer division. The deal transferred the ThinkPad notebook and ThinkCentre desktop businesses, along with employees, manufacturing and engineering expertise, global distribution channels, and customer relationships. Lenovo retained and developed the Think brand while using the acquisition to accelerate its international expansion. IBM also held a stake in Lenovo after the transaction, later selling its remaining interest by 2011. Lenovo continued to use acquisitions and partnerships to broaden its geographic and product reach. In 2011 it created a personal-computer joint venture with NEC for Japan and agreed to acquire Medion in Germany. In 2012 it acquired Digibras in Brazil, whose products used the CCE brand. The company also pursued mobile computing. After selling its smartphone and tablet division in 2008 to concentrate on PCs, Lenovo bought the division back in 2009 and rebuilt its mobile operations. Its later acquisition of Motorola Mobility from Google in 2014 supplied a recognized international smartphone platform. The company also expanded into enterprise technology. Its purchase of IBM's x86 server business in 2014 added servers and related infrastructure to its portfolio. This complemented its established PC business with data-center hardware, storage, high-performance computing, and infrastructure services. Lenovo's modern portfolio is organized around multiple specialist brands. ThinkPad and ThinkCentre serve commercial and professional users; IdeaPad and IdeaCentre address mainstream consumers; Yoga emphasizes convertible and premium designs; and Legion and LOQ target gaming. Motorola operates as the principal smartphone brand. Lenovo additionally sells tablets, workstations, servers, storage, software, smart televisions, and technology services. Research and development locations have included Beijing, Morrisville, other locations in mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Stuttgart, Yamato, and elsewhere. The company's international scale enabled it to become the world's largest PC vendor by unit shipments in 2013, while its strategy increasingly combines devices, infrastructure, and services.
