Overview
Lekker Energie GmbH is a German energy supply company that sells electricity and gas to private households and commercial customers throughout Germany. It was founded as Nuon Deutschland, the German retail subsidiary of the Dutch Nuon group, and was renamed Lekker Energie in June 2010 after the German business was sold. Since September 2013 the company has been wholly owned by Stadtwerke Krefeld (SWK), the municipal utility of Krefeld in North Rhine-Westphalia; SWK had first acquired a 49% stake in 2011. The company is headquartered in Berlin-Mitte near Nordbahnhof and is also the basic electricity supplier (Grundversorger) in Heinsberg, North Rhine-Westphalia. Lekker positions itself as a customer-friendly, fairly priced energy provider. Its core products are electricity and gas tariffs, marketed under names such as lekker Strom and Wakker Gas, with a strong emphasis on 100% renewable electricity from German solar and wind parks. The company has repeatedly been recognized in comparison tests for service quality and describes its mission as being "the most customer-friendly energy provider." Beyond pure supply, it has expanded into energy services, offering photovoltaic systems and heat pumps, and more recently a balcony solar power plant product (lekker Strom BalkonPlus) that combines a green electricity tariff with a delivered plug-in solar kit. By the end of 2024 the company supplied around 387,000 electricity and gas customers, and it has at times reported more than 400,000 customers, placing it among Germany's larger nationwide independent suppliers. Growth has come both organically and through customer-portfolio acquisitions, including the Stadtwerke Energie Verbund (SEV) customer base in 2019, roughly 9,000 customers from Westfalen AG in December 2019, and about 40,000 customers from PST Europe Sales in September 2020. In the 2023 Ökostrom survey by the trade journal Energie & Management, Lekker was ranked the fourth-largest supplier of green electricity to private households. Lekker presents itself as an independent company within a strong group, combining start-up-like agility with the solidity of a municipal utility parent. It maintains its own customer service with more than 50 in-house staff and an online customer portal. The company is also active in sponsorship and community engagement, notably as a long-time supporter of the Füchse Berlin handball club, the Krefeld Pinguine ice hockey team, the Lekker-Vereinswettbewerb for Berlin sports clubs, and the Christmas tree on Pariser Platz in front of the Brandenburg Gate.
History
Lekker Energie traces its origins to Nuon Deutschland, the German retail subsidiary of the Dutch energy group Nuon, which supplied private and business customers in Germany. In February 2009 the Swedish energy group Vattenfall largely acquired Nuon's supply business. As a condition imposed by the European Commission on Vattenfall's purchase of the Dutch Nuon Energy, Vattenfall was required to sell the entire German business of Nuon. In mid-March 2010 the Westphalian energy company Enervie – Südwestfalen Energie und Wasser acquired Nuon Deutschland from Vattenfall, and shortly afterwards the company was renamed Lekker Energie (June 2010). In 2010 the company attracted international attention when it supported a world-record drive of an electric car without intermediate charging from Munich to Berlin. In 2011 Stadtwerke Krefeld (SWK) acquired a 49% stake in Lekker Energie, and since September 2013 the company has been 100% owned by SWK. Lekker began supplying customers with electricity in 2006 under the tariff lekker Strom, initially in Berlin and Hamburg, and expanded sales across Germany in the following years. In July 2006 it entered the Berlin and Hamburg markets with natural gas for private customers under the tariff Wakker Gas, enabling private households to switch providers for the first time. By 31 December 2024 the company supplied 387,000 customers with electricity and gas. It is headquartered in Berlin-Mitte near Nordbahnhof and is the basic electricity supplier in Heinsberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, where it plans to move its 100 employees from an industrial park into the town center in 2027. Growth has been supplemented by acquisitions and participations. In 2018 Lekker acquired a stake in the Berlin start-up Mieterengel, which handles tenant advisory services via an online platform. In spring 2019 it took over the customer base of Stadtwerke Energie Verbund (SEV) in North Rhine-Westphalia (12,000 electricity and gas customers). In December 2019 it acquired around 9,000 electricity and natural gas customers from Westfalen AG. In September 2020 it accelerated its growth by taking over around 40,000 electricity and natural gas customers from PST Europe Sales, bringing its customer base to more than 400,000 for the first time according to the company. In the 2023 Ökostrom survey by the trade journal Energie & Management, Lekker was ranked the fourth-largest supplier of green electricity to private households. Lekker has also built a public profile through sponsorship and social engagement. From 2005 to 2014 Nuon Deutschland / Lekker Energie supported the Füchse Berlin handball team, celebrating promotion to the Bundesliga (2006/2007) and entry into the Champions League (2011) as main sponsor. From 2011 until the 2021/2022 season it was jersey sponsor for all away games of the Krefeld Pinguine. From 2012 to 2014 it partnered with Phoenix Hagen in the Beko Basketball Bundesliga, appearing on the away shorts in the company's purple and yellow colors. It supported the Lekker-Energie-Cup, Germany's largest indoor youth handball tournament, until 2014. In Heinsberg it supports the local sports club BC 09 Oberbruch and, in cooperation with Deutsche Umwelt-Aktion, has funded environmental education for fourth-grade primary school pupils since 2010. Since 2017 it has promoted youth sports in Berlin through the annual Lekker-Vereinswettbewerb, open to all registered Berlin clubs, with total funding of 35,000 euros in 2026. It also supports social initiatives such as Jona's Haus in Berlin-Staaken and the children's charity Die Arche. Since 2015 it has sponsored the Christmas tree on Pariser Platz in front of the Brandenburg Gate each year, covering transport and installation of the fir from Thuringia and decorating it with around 30,000 lights and hundreds of ornaments, with the illumination switched on on the first Advent by volunteers who also receive a donation from Lekker Energie.
