LEGO Atlantis

LEGO Atlantis was a LEGO construction-toy theme built around an underwater adventure narrative. It portrayed a salvage and exploration crew searching the ocean for shipwrecks, treasure, and the lost city of Atlantis. The range combined buildable underwater vehicles and structures with character-driven play, including diver minifigures, sea-creature antagonists, and a portal leading to the legendary city. Although the theme was presented as a 2010 product line, its first associated sets became available from December 2009 and the range was discontinued by the end of 2011. The central protagonists were the Atlantis Crew, a group of deep-sea explorers led by Captain Ace Speedman. The team also included marine biologist Dr. Jeff Fisher, First Mate Lance Spears, technology specialist Axel Storm, apprentice Bobby Buoy, and Professor Samantha Artesia Rhodes. The opposing Atlantis Warriors used humanoid bodies with heads and features based on marine animals. Their notable members included the Squid Warrior, Manta Warrior, Shark Warrior, and the Portal Emperor, who guarded the entrance to Atlantis. This story framework gave the sets a clear conflict between exploration and discovery on one side and supernatural or aquatic guardians on the other. The design language emphasized recognizable underwater-adventure equipment. LEGO designer William Thorogood described a focus-group process that identified elements such as propellers, dome cockpits, large lights, helmets, harpoons, torpedo-like weapons, tridents, giant squid, and sharks as essential visual features. These motifs appeared across submarines, diving vehicles, play features, minifigure accessories, and enemy characters. The resulting range sat between traditional LEGO vehicle construction and fantasy adventure, using the Atlantis legend as a setting rather than attempting to reproduce a historical or literary interpretation of the myth. The product assortment included small vehicles and playsets as well as larger locations. Examples included Seabed Scavenger, Typhoon Turbo Sub, Gateway of the Squid, Atlantis Exploration HQ, Shadow Snapper, and Temple of Atlantis. The largest cited set, Portal of Atlantis, contained 1,007 pieces and included a portal, several divers, the Portal Emperor, and other character figures. LEGO also supported the range with accessories such as a water gun, harpoon blaster, trident, shield, minifigure magnets, and keyrings, along with the two-to-four-player board game Atlantis Treasure. A 22-minute animated production, LEGO Atlantis: The Movie, followed treasure hunters seeking the lost city and was released online through Cartoon Network's website in January 2010. Tie-in publishing included activity and building books released in 2010. The theme also appeared in physical attractions. In 2011, LEGOLAND Windsor introduced Atlantis Submarine Voyage, a submarine-themed dark ride incorporating Sea Life exhibits and a large aquarium. The attraction was later refurbished and renamed LEGO City Deep Sea Adventure in 2019. Despite these extensions, LEGO Atlantis remained a time-limited theme and is no longer an active product range.

LEGO Atlantis: The Movie was a 22-minute animated production about treasure hunters seeking the lost city; it appeared on the Cartoon Network website in January 2010. In 2010, a LEGO Summer Camp on Paradise Island in the Bahamas used Atlantis branding and included a life-sized LEGO diver figure known as L.A.N.S.E. In 2011, LEGOLAND Windsor opened Atlantis Submarine Voyage in its Adventure Land area. The attraction combined a submarine-style dark ride with Sea Life exhibits and a tank holding approximately one million litres of water and around 50 marine species. After refurbishment in 2019, it became LEGO City Deep Sea Adventure. The Atlantis construction theme itself was discontinued by the end of 2011 and is therefore a historical, rather than active, LEGO product line.
