Overview

Legios (also styled LEGIOS) was a German information-services company and the operator of an eponymous commercial legal information system focused on business and tax law. It was established in early 2001 with headquarters in Frankfurt am Main as a joint venture of three leading German legal and business publishers: Verlagsgruppe Handelsblatt GmbH, Carl Heymanns Verlag KG, and Verlag Dr. Otto Schmidt KG. Its stated purpose was to publish specialized legal information linked with matching business information, positioning itself as a cross-publisher platform for professional content. The Legios portal, legios.de, was a specialized commercial database for business and tax law. Its content was drawn primarily from Verlag Dr. Otto Schmidt and included around 20 legal commentaries, 15 handbooks, and 16 professional journals, each enriched with case law, statutory texts, and practice reports from juris. The main target audience was qualified professional advisers — lawyers, auditors, and tax advisers — advising companies and institutions on complex business matters, as well as corporate legal departments, courts, administrations, and universities. In 2002 Haufe-Verlag became a shareholder. In 2006 Verlag Dr. Otto Schmidt KG took over the Legios internet specialist portal entirely, and the company's registered office moved from Frankfurt am Main to the publisher's house in Cologne. At the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2008, Verlag Dr. Otto Schmidt and juris GmbH announced a cooperation agreement under which Legios content was linked with juris decisions and legislation. In 2013 the Legios content was integrated into the juris offering and the standalone portal at legios.de was discontinued. Legios therefore operated as an independent brand for roughly twelve years before being folded into juris.

In 2002 Haufe-Verlag became a shareholder. In 2006 Verlag Dr. Otto Schmidt KG took over the Legios internet specialist portal completely. In the course of this takeover, the Legios company headquarters moved from Frankfurt am Main to the publisher's house in Cologne. At the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2008 it was announced that Verlag Dr. Otto Schmidt and juris GmbH had concluded a cooperation agreement. The contents of Legios were linked with the decisions and legislation from the juris offering.
