Overview

LÉGER (レジエ) is a Japanese titanium jewellery brand operated by LÉGER Co., Ltd. (レジエ株式会社), headquartered in Sanjō, Niigata Prefecture — a city long known for metalworking. The company was established in April 1997 as J.T. Metal Co., Ltd. (ジェイ・ティ・メタル株式会社) and launched the LÉGER brand in 1998, when it began selling what it describes as Japan's first precision-cast titanium accessories. The brand name comes from the French word léger, meaning "light," a reference to titanium's low weight. The brand's core proposition is safe, comfortable jewellery made from pure titanium. Titanium is roughly half the weight of silver and about a quarter the weight of platinum, is highly corrosion-resistant, and forms an oxide film that keeps metal ions from leaching out — making it suitable for people with metal allergies. LÉGER positions its products around this combination of lightness, strength and skin-friendliness, and states that it uses only high-purity pure titanium. Its product range is organised into rings, necklaces, pierce/ear cuffs, and bracelets/bangles, sold mainly through its own online store and previously through department stores and retail chains in Japan. The company has a strong manufacturing identity. It developed what it says was Japan's smallest titanium melting furnace, and its casting process — rubber mould making, wax injection, wax tree assembly, slurry coating, dewaxing, firing, melting and casting, mould breaking, polishing and inspection — is presented as a craft-intensive, largely hand-finished operation. Because titanium casting is technically demanding and relatively rare worldwide, LÉGER frames each piece as having an individual character. Beyond jewellery, the company has pursued titanium and metal-related technical work, including utility models and patents in medical and everyday-product fields, and it has held manufacturing and sales approvals for certain medical devices. It has registered the LÉGER trademark in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and China. In 2014 the company changed its name from J.T. Metal Co., Ltd. to LÉGER Co., Ltd. It marked its 20th anniversary in 2017, completed a new head office building in 2019, and in 2020 established "Titanium Accessory Day" (2 February) through the Japan Anniversary Association. It joined the Japan Metal Allergy Association in 2020 and the Japan Titanium Society as a supporting member in 2021. Leadership passed in March 2024, with Yoshihiro Asano becoming representative director and president and Yoshijiro Asano becoming representative director and chairman.

History

LÉGER's history begins in April 1997, when J.T. Metal Co., Ltd. (ジェイ・ティ・メタル株式会社) was established in Sanjō, Niigata Prefecture, a city with a deep metalworking tradition. In the same year the company developed what it describes as Japan's smallest titanium melting furnace, laying the technical foundation for its later jewellery business. In 1998 the company launched its own brand, LÉGER (レジエ), and began selling what it presents as Japan's first precision-cast titanium accessories. It exhibited at "Venture JAPAN '98," an event organised with the Ministry of International Trade and Industry and small and medium enterprise bodies. In 1999 it opened an official shopping website, moving early into direct online sales. During 2000 the brand expanded into physical retail, with titanium rings and other items sold at major Japanese department stores such as Mitsukoshi Isetan and at Tokyu Hands' Shinjuku store. That year it also obtained a utility model for a "titanium ham" (utility model registration No. 3072197). In 2001 the company participated in the development of a national project (MF-15), and in 2002 its business innovation plan was approved under the Small and Medium Enterprise Management Innovation Support Act; it also obtained a utility model for a "purification tool" (No. 3087669). In 2004 the company was hit by the Niigata heavy-rain disaster of 13 July and completed recovery. In 2005 it obtained manufacturing and sales approval for a Class II household permanent-magnet magnetic therapy device as a third-class medical device, and jointly filed for a patent on a "bone fixation device" (Patent No. 3732458). Trademark registrations for LÉGER followed: Taiwan in 2006, Japan in 2006 (registration No. 5001591), Hong Kong in 2007 and China in 2007. In 2007 it also obtained a utility model for a "decorative body for accessories" (No. 3136989). In 2008 it jointly obtained patents for an "external fixator and clamp" (No. 4208663) and an "external fixator" (No. 4110208). In 2010 the company obtained a utility model for a "medicine carrying case" (No. 3159574). In 2014 it changed its corporate name from J.T. Metal Co., Ltd. to LÉGER Co., Ltd. (レジエ株式会社). In 2017 it marked its 20th anniversary and launched a corporate website. In 2018 it obtained a design registration for a "portable tablet container" (design registration No. 1604269). A new head office building was completed in 2019. In 2020 the company established "Titanium Accessory Day" (2 February) through the Japan Anniversary Association and joined the Japan Metal Allergy Association. In 2021 it joined the Japan Titanium Society as a supporting member, received certification for its business continuity enhancement plan, and began serialising a comic about metal allergy experiences on Twitter. On 31 March 2024, Yoshihiro Asano became representative director and president, while Yoshijiro Asano became representative director and chairman.
