Overview
Legal & General is a British multinational financial services group headquartered in London and listed on the London Stock Exchange. Founded in 1836 as the New Law Life Assurance Society, it began as a life assurance society for members of the legal profession before opening its policies to the wider public. The business later adopted the Legal & General name and developed into one of the United Kingdom's largest providers of life insurance, retirement products and institutional investment services. The group's activities have evolved considerably over nearly two centuries. Its principal businesses include retirement solutions, annuities, pension risk transfer, life insurance, lifetime mortgages and investment management. Legal & General Investment Management, historically known as LGIM, became one of the United Kingdom's most significant institutional asset managers, serving pension schemes, insurers, sovereign and corporate clients, financial intermediaries and individual investors. In 2024, the group combined LGIM with Legal & General Capital, its alternative-assets and direct-investment arm, into a unified Asset Management business intended to bring public and private-market capabilities together. Legal & General has also used acquisitions, joint ventures and international subsidiaries to expand its insurance and retirement platform. Its United States operations have included Banner Life Insurance Company and William Penn, while Legal & General Reinsurance was established in Bermuda to support international life and pension transactions. In India, the group helped establish IndiaFirst Life Insurance Company with Bank of Baroda and Andhra Bank. It has also completed pension and annuity transactions in continental Europe, including a major UK annuity portfolio acquisition from Aegon and a reinsurance transaction involving the Dutch market. The group has periodically entered businesses outside its current core. It operated a bank and mortgage-services business, owned estate-agency networks and invested in housebuilding through Cala Homes and Legal & General Modular Homes. These activities were later reduced or exited. The general insurance division was sold to Allianz, with the transaction taking effect in January 2020, ending Legal & General's direct involvement in most home and pet insurance operations. The modular-homes venture stopped production in 2023 after planning constraints, pandemic disruption and a weak sales pipeline, while Cala Homes was sold in 2024 as part of a broader withdrawal from housing. Today, Legal & General is primarily positioned around long-term financial security and institutional capital. Its retirement businesses address workplace pensions, individual retirement income, annuities, pension buy-ins and buy-outs, and related longevity-risk solutions. Its asset management activities cover index, active, liability-driven, alternative and private-market investment strategies. The group also participates in the wider retirement ecosystem through lifetime mortgages and other products linked to later-life housing wealth. Its scale, long-term liabilities and institutional client base make it a major participant in UK pension funding, insurance investment and capital markets.
History
Legal & General was established in June 1836 by Sergeant John Adams and five other lawyers meeting at a coffee house in Chancery Lane, London. Initially named the New Law Life Assurance Society, it was designed to provide life assurance to people working in the legal profession. The organization later changed its name to Legal & General Life Assurance Society as it opened policies to the general public, while maintaining restrictions on share ownership connected with the legal profession. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the society expanded across the United Kingdom and developed an international insurance presence. In the 1930s it acquired a pensions business from Metropolitan Life Assurance Company of New York. Its main administrative base moved from London to Kingswood in Surrey during the 1940s, although senior management functions remained associated with London. The Kingswood site was expanded during the following decades before its closure was announced in the 2010s; it shut in 2018. The group became increasingly corporate in structure during the 1970s, when the society was placed within Legal & General Group plc. International expansion included the creation of Legal & General America in 1981, the acquisition of Government Employees Life Insurance Company and its New York affiliate, and the later adoption of the Banner name for that US business. William Penn was acquired in 1989 as a subsidiary of Banner Life Insurance Company. The group also established operations in France and acquired a Dutch insurance branch during the 1980s. Legal & General diversified beyond insurance during the late twentieth century. It entered estate agency through the acquisition of Whitegates in 1989, sponsored ITV regional weather forecasts between 1991 and 1994, and explored a proposed merger with National Westminster Bank in 1999. The merger would have created a large UK bancassurance group but was not completed. In the early 2000s, Legal & General sold its bank and mortgage-services businesses to Northern Rock and disposed of its interest in the Gresham Insurance joint venture to Barclays. The company continued to reshape its retirement and international activities after 2000. It acquired Suffolk Life in 2008, helped create IndiaFirst Life Insurance Company in 2009 with Bank of Baroda and Andhra Bank, and outsourced parts of its technology operations to external providers. Lucida Life, a pensions buyout company, was acquired in 2013. Legal & General also increased its participation in housing: it acquired a minority stake in Cala Homes in 2013 and later took full control, while launching Legal & General Modular Homes in 2015. The group expanded its retirement-risk capabilities through Legal & General Reinsurance, established in Bermuda in 2014. Its first external transaction followed in the Dutch market in 2015, and in 2016 Legal & General Assurance acquired a substantial UK annuity portfolio from Aegon. In 2019, the group acquired a minority investment in electric-vehicle charging operator Pod Point and agreed to sell Legal & General Insurance to Allianz. The insurance transaction completed in January 2020, with the transferred business subsequently integrated into Allianz's wider UK operations. Housing became a significant area of retrenchment in the 2020s. Legal & General Modular Homes stopped production in 2023 after failing to build a sufficiently strong sales pipeline, with the company citing planning delays and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Legal & General then appointed advisers in 2024 to manage the sale of Cala Homes, which was completed later that year. The group also continued to use its insurance and retirement platform for large pension transactions, including the 2023 buy-in covering the Boots pension scheme. In 2024, Legal & General combined LGIM and Legal & General Capital into a unified Asset Management business. This reorganization reflected the group's strategy of bringing conventional institutional investment management together with private and alternative assets. The modern Legal & General group is therefore concentrated on retirement, life insurance, reinsurance and investment management, while its former general-insurance, banking, estate-agency and housebuilding activities have largely been sold, closed or placed outside the core operating model.

Retirement and annuities
Legal & General Retirement provides retirement-income products and institutional pension-risk solutions. These offerings support employers, trustees and employees through accumulation, investment selection and retirement-income planning. They form part of Legal & General's long-term savings proposition and connect its insurance balance sheet with its institutional investment capabilities.
Equity release
Lifetime mortgages
Lifetime mortgages are later-life lending products secured against residential property. They can allow eligible homeowners to release some housing wealth while remaining in their homes, subject to product terms and interest accumulation. Within Legal & General's retirement platform, lifetime mortgages also represent an investment and origination activity linked to later-life financial planning.
