Overview

Leekes is a Welsh family-owned retail and leisure group whose principal business is the sale of furniture, home furnishings, kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, garden products, decorating supplies and other home-improvement goods. The business traces its origins to 1897, when James Henry Leeke established a blacksmith and tool-sharpening operation in the Rhondda Valley. That small enterprise developed into an ironmonger and builders' merchant, and later into a broader home-furnishings retailer with department-store-style locations across Wales and parts of England. The company's early development followed a multigenerational pattern. James Henry Leeke's son Llewellyn assumed control in 1933 and moved the business into a larger Tonypandy shop in 1948. During the 1960s, the next generation, represented by Gerald Leeke, expanded the range beyond traditional ironmongery and building supplies. Kitchen and bathroom displays were introduced, additional showroom space was acquired, and a former goods station in Trealaw was developed to support retailing, builders' supplies and customer parking. This combination of practical home-improvement merchandise and showroom-led categories became an important part of Leekes' later identity. Leekes entered large-format retailing with the acquisition of a site at Talbot Green near Llantrisant and the opening of a store there in 1977. Over time, the business added furniture, bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, lighting, textiles, cookware, tableware, home decoration, garden furniture, garden-centre products, DIY materials, decorating supplies, conservatories and glazing. Its larger locations operate as destination stores, combining home-improvement departments with furniture and lifestyle categories; smaller stores concentrate more heavily on furniture and home products. The group diversified beyond retail during the 1990s and 2000s. In 1994, the Leekes Retail and Leisure Group acquired a golf-club property at Hensol in the Vale of Glamorgan. The company subsequently developed The Vale Resort, which began trading as a hotel operation in 1999 and includes accommodation, leisure facilities, a spa and two golf courses across a large parkland estate. In 2003, Leekes acquired the adjoining Hensol Castle estate. The castle and its surrounding grounds operate as a conference, events and wedding venue, giving the group a hospitality and property-development presence alongside its retail operations. The corporate structure was reorganised in 2005 into a group of companies, with trading businesses including Leekes Limited held as wholly owned subsidiaries of J.H. Leeke and Sons Limited. Retail expansion continued through acquisitions. In 2009, Leekes acquired Midlands-based Cole's Home Furnishing, adding stores in Bilston, Bedworth and Fenton. The Bedworth location was later sold in 2018, while the Bilston store remained within the Leekes store network. In 2016, the group acquired Park Furnishers (Bristol), a family-run furniture business that continues to trade under the Park Furnishers name from Eastgate Retail Park in Bristol. Leekes opened a new store at Kingsditch Retail Park in Cheltenham in 2024. The location offers furniture, kitchens, bedrooms and home accessories, together with an in-store coffee shop. The group's retail presence includes stores in South Wales, South West England and the Midlands, as well as the Tonypandy builders' merchant and the separately branded Park Furnishers operation. Leekes remains associated with long-term family ownership, regional retailing and a broad proposition spanning home improvement, furniture, lifestyle products and leisure hospitality.

History

Leekes began in 1897 when James Henry Leeke established a blacksmith and tool-sharpening business in Clydach Vale in the Rhondda Valley. The operation initially occupied the rear of the family home, while a small ironmongery business operated from the front room. This combination of metalworking, tools and practical household merchandise formed the foundation of the company. James Henry Leeke's son Llewellyn took over the business in 1933, aged 22. In 1948 he purchased a larger shop in Dunraven Street, Tonypandy, where the family operated an ironmonger and builders' merchant. The business expanded its retail and trade-supporting activities during the following decades. In the 1960s, Llewellyn's son Gerald joined full-time and broadened the product assortment. Kitchen and bathroom displays were added, and a neighbouring shop was taken over to create additional showroom space. The company also acquired a former goods station in Trealaw, providing room for retail premises, a builders' yard and customer parking. Leekes moved toward large-format retailing in 1977, when it acquired a site at Talbot Green near Llantrisant and opened a store described as a DIY superstore. The business gradually developed a wider home proposition, adding furniture, bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, lighting, garden products, home decoration and other lifestyle categories. A 2007 account by David Leeke documented the development of the family business from its origins in the industrial Rhondda through the twentieth century. The group diversified into leisure in 1994 by acquiring a golf-club property at Hensol in the Vale of Glamorgan. This became the basis for The Vale Resort, which began trading as a hotel operation in 1999. The resort developed into a substantial leisure complex with a four-star hotel, leisure club, spa and two championship golf courses set within extensive parkland. In 2003, Leekes purchased the neighbouring Hensol Castle estate. The castle, its landscaped grounds and associated estate facilities were subsequently used for conferences, weddings and other events. A corporate reorganisation in 2005 placed the trading companies, including Leekes Limited, within a group structure under J.H. Leeke and Sons Limited. Retail expansion beyond Wales followed in 2009 through the purchase of Cole's Home Furnishing, which added sites in Bilston, Bedworth and Fenton. The Bedworth store was sold in 2018, while Bilston continued as a Leekes location. In 2016, Leekes acquired Park Furnishers (Bristol), retaining the Park Furnishers name and operating the business from Eastgate Retail Park in Bristol. In 2024, Leekes opened a new Cheltenham store at Kingsditch Retail Park. The site broadened the group's presence in the South West and offered furniture, kitchens, bedrooms, home accessories and a coffee shop. The group remains a family-owned regional retailer with stores and related operations in Wales, South West England and the Midlands, complemented by its hospitality, leisure and events properties.
