Overview
Le Spot Évry is a regional shopping centre located in Évry-Courcouronnes in the Essonne department of the Île-de-France region, south of Paris. It opened on 19 March 1975 as the regional shopping centre of the new town of Évry, conceived as the commercial heart of the planned urban development. For most of its life it was known as Évry 2; after two years of renovation work it was rebranded as Le Spot in early October 2023. The centre is anchored by a Carrefour hypermarket with a sales area of roughly 14,000 m² and about 5,177 m² of back-of-house reserves. The hypermarket was originally an Euromarché store and became Carrefour after the Carrefour group acquired Euromarché in 1991. Around the hypermarket, Le Spot hosts approximately 225 shops and restaurants, spanning fashion for women, men and children, beauty and health, culture, sport and leisure, home and decoration, jewellery and watches, shoes and leather goods, telephony and services, and food outlets. Notable tenants have included Zara, which opened its largest French store — a 4,000 m² unit — in the centre on 18 August 2018, as well as Bershka, Armand Thiery, Alain Afflelou, Action and Starbucks. Beyond retail, Le Spot functions as a leisure and cultural destination. It contains the Arènes de l'Agora, a 3,000-seat concert and performance venue, a CGR cinema with ten screens and a total capacity of 2,000 seats, the Scène nationale de l'Essonne (a multidisciplinary performance hall with 1,000 seats), a fitness club, a swimming pool and the François Le Comte ice rink. The centre also offers services such as free Wi-Fi, free parking for the first three hours on weekdays and after 17:00 and on Saturdays, lost-property reporting, phone charging, gift cards, child pushchairs, cash machines, accessibility facilities and public toilets/baby points. It has several car parks with a total capacity of about 5,300 spaces. Le Spot is directly served by the Évry-Courcouronnes – Centre station on RER line D and tramway line 12, and by numerous bus routes. It sits close to the University of Évry. The centre has undergone repeated renovation and expansion, notably between 2001 and 2003, when it gained 15,000 m² and grew from 160 to 235 shops, and again in 2022, when further enlargement and renovation increased the number of shops and restaurants. A major restructuring programme envisages a 10,000 m² food and restaurant zone with 7,000 m² of terraces, an expanded Arènes de l'Agora, a renewed Agora square, pool and ice rink, an escape game, an artistic expression area, ephemeral night pavilions and a ten-screen cinema equipped with ICE technology, alongside a reconfigured 70,000 m² shopping area. The centre is operated under the Shopping Center Company umbrella.
History
The regional shopping centre of Évry opened on 19 March 1975, created alongside the new town of Évry to serve as its commercial hub. It was originally anchored by a Euromarché hypermarket. In 1991, following the acquisition of the Euromarché group by Carrefour, the hypermarket was converted to the Carrefour banner. Between 2001 and 2003, major renovation and extension works lasting 18 months were carried out. The centre gained 15,000 m² of surface area and grew from 160 to 235 shops. Further modifications were made in 2016. On 18 August 2018, the largest Zara store in France, with a surface area of 4,000 m², opened at the centre; this required the consolidation of several spaces and reduced the number of shops from 235 to 225. After two years of works, the centre, previously known as Évry 2, was renamed Le Spot in early October 2023. In 2022, expansion and renovation works had already increased the number of boutiques and restaurants. The centre has also been the subject of a broader restructuring programme. It has developed a 10,000 m² area (with 7,000 m² of terraces) dedicated to dining, divided into three parts (restaurant, food with seating, and private terraces). In 2018 a new fitness room opened. At the beginning of 2021, renovation and enlargement of the Arènes de l'Agora were planned to allow larger musical and sporting events, along with renewal of the Agora square, the swimming pool and the ice rink. The centre also planned an escape game, an artistic expression area, ephemeral night pavilions, and a cinema with ten screens equipped with ICE technology. A reconfiguration of the shopping centre was envisaged with a 70,000 m² shopping area and new brands. Today Le Spot comprises approximately 225 shops, including a Carrefour hypermarket with a sales area of about 14,000 m² and 5,177 m² of reserves. It hosts numerous dining locations, including several fast-food outlets. For entertainment, it includes the Arènes de l'Agora (a 3,000-seat concert and performance hall) and a CGR cinema with ten screens and a total capacity of 2,000 seats. Culturally, it houses the Scène nationale de l'Essonne, a multidisciplinary performance hall with 1,000 seats. For sport, it offers a fitness club, a swimming pool and the François Le Comte ice rink. The centre has several paid car parks — free for the first three hours Monday to Friday and after 17:00 and on Saturdays — with a total capacity of 5,300 spaces. It is located immediately near the University of Évry. Access is provided by the Évry-Courcouronnes – Centre station, served by RER line D and tramway line 12, as well as numerous bus lines from the Évry Centre Essonne, Val d'Yerres Val de Seine, Cœur d'Essonne, Sénart, Essonne Sud Est, Paris-Saclay and Fontainebleau – Moret networks. By road, the centre is reached from the A6, RN 7 and RN 104 motorways via the Évry Centre exits.
