Overview
Le Bord de l'eau is a French publishing house founded in January 1994 by Dominique-Emmanuel Blanchard (known as DEB) in Latresne, near Bordeaux. It grew out of a literary review of the same name first published in December 1993. Initially focused on literature and classical music, the house gradually shifted toward essays, documents, and the humanities and social sciences. In 2001, Jean-Luc Veyssy joined the company and has directed it since 2007. Its headquarters are now in Lormont, Gironde. The group also includes an audiovisual production company (Le Bord de l'eau productions, created in 2005) and a Belgian subsidiary, La Muette, established in 2009. In 2013, it acquired the catalogue and collection of the MAUSS (Mouvement anti-utilitariste dans les sciences sociales). On 8 December 2023, it took over the review Le Festin, which had been in receivership. The publisher is known for its thematic collections, often directed by prominent intellectuals, covering topics such as ecology, feminism, football, media, economics, and philosophy. It publishes several journals, including Germinal, La Revue du Mauss, Écologie & Politique, Illusio, and Dissidences. With a catalogue of committed, critical works, Le Bord de l'eau positions itself as an 'editor of ideas' in the French-speaking world.
History
The history of Le Bord de l'eau began in December 1993 with the publication of a literary review of the same name, bringing together texts—short stories and narratives—by both known and unknown authors. Faced with a flood of manuscripts following the first issue, Dominique-Emmanuel Blanchard founded the publishing house the following month, in January 1994, in Latresne near Bordeaux, while continuing to publish the review, commonly called 'BDL'. In 2001, Jean-Luc Veyssy joined the company, and since 2007 he has directed the three entities: the review, the publishing house, and the production company. In 2005, DEB created an audiovisual production and creation company, Le Bord de l'eau productions. In 2009, a subsidiary, La Muette, was established in Belgium. In 2013, the house acquired the catalogue and collection of the MAUSS (Mouvement anti-utilitariste dans les sciences sociales). On 8 December 2023, the publishing house officially took over the review Le Festin, which had been in receivership, ensuring its continued publication under the same name, editorial line, and graphic charter, and pursuing its digital development. Initially focused on literature and classical music, the publisher gradually shifted its orientation toward essays, documents, and the humanities and social sciences. It has also developed numerous collections, often led by prominent intellectuals, and publishes several journals.
