Bob was apprenticing at Singer Sewing Machine Manufacturing, while Tony owned a small hardware store on Main Street. When construction started on a nearby housing development, new homeowners came to Tony's store with questions about creating and caring for their lawns, and Tony began conducting Sunday morning lawn care workshops that drew standing-room-only crowds. After Tony discussed his frustration about homeowners spending money, time and effort without desired results, the two decided to start their own lawn care business. Auto Lawn, the predecessor to Lawn Doctor, came to life with a handshake. Bob left Singer to devise a machine that could build and maintain lawns, which became the industry's first automated lawn care machine, while Tony marketed the business through his hardware store. Local salesmen and a newspaper began calling them 'The Lawn Doctors,' and Tony and Bob re-christened the company 'Lawn Doctor,' with the logo becoming the green thumb. Bob converted his basement into 'the factory' where he built the next three machines, and in 1966 the first tractor combine was created.
