Overview
Lavender Cottage (薰衣草森林) is a Taiwanese leisure, tourism, and lifestyle brand group that began in 2001 as a small mountain coffee shop and lavender field in Xinshe, Taichung. Founded by two women, Ting-Fei and Hui-Chun, the brand grew from a romantic dream of planting lavender in the mountains into a multi-brand enterprise centered on healing, nature, sustainability, and collaboration. The group operates garden parks, restaurants, bed-and-breakfast accommodations, a travel agency, and a line of herbal and lifestyle products. Its flagship property, the Xinshe Forest in Taichung, remains a popular recreational destination in central Taiwan and has been repeatedly shortlisted among Taiwan's top 100 tourist attractions. Over the years, the group expanded to other locations such as Jianshi in Hsinchu, Mingde in Miaoli, and Caotun in Nantou, though some sites have since closed. The brand is known for its "wall-less art museum" concept, integrating nature, art, and local culture. It has also pursued sustainability, achieving carbon neutrality certification for 15 products in 2023. The company is headquartered in West District, Taichung City, and operates as a private joint-stock company.
History
Lavender Cottage was founded in 2001 by two women, Ting-Fei and Hui-Chun, who planted lavender and herbs in the mountains of Xinshe, Taichung, and opened a small café named Lavender Forest. The first store, Xinshe, opened on November 9, 2001. In 2004, a second location, Jianshi, was established in Hsinchu. In 2005, the Xinshe store was recognized by the Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs as a 'Creative Life Enterprise,' marking its entry into the cultural and creative industries. In 2012, a fire destroyed the forest café at Xinshe, but it was rebuilt within three months. In 2013, co-founder Hui-Chun passed away. In 2014, the 'Original Intention Cabin' was built by the forest team at Xinshe. In 2015, the brand launched the 'wall-less art museum' concept and transitioned to a second-generation store format; it also received the 2015 CommonWealth CSR Corporate Citizenship Award and was named one of the top ten cultural and creative brands by La Vie. In 2019, the Mingde store in Miaoli closed. In 2022, the group launched the 'Forest Traveler' membership program as part of its digital transformation. In 2023, 15 of its best-selling products across all brands received carbon neutrality certification from TÜV Rheinland, making it the first tourism brand in Taiwan to achieve zero-carbon certification. In 2025, the Jianshi store closed. In 2026, the Nantou Jiujiu Peak Park began trial operation on March 9. The group has expanded into multiple brands including Xinzhifangting, Tonghua Village, Slow Inn, and Lavender Forest Select, and continues to operate its flagship Xinshe Forest in Taichung.
