Overview
Laurens Spethmann Holding (LSH) is an independent, fourth-generation family-owned German holding company headquartered in Seevetal. Through its subsidiaries it produces and distributes tea, fruit bars, cereal bars, cereals, nuts, dried fruit and seeds, as well as sustainable packaging made from corn grits, serving brand, private-label, B2B and out-of-home markets. The company states it has 1,788 employees and revenue of €816 million in a year, and describes itself as having a tradition of over one hundred years. The holding was founded in 1996 and took over all of the Ostfriesische Tee Gesellschaft (OTG) shareholdings; the OTG remains its largest subsidiary alongside ten further subsidiaries and participations.
History
The origins of the group lie with the Ostfriesische Tee Gesellschaft (OTG), founded in 1907 by Laurens Janssen. In 1953 the founder's grandson, Laurens Spethmann, together with his wife Marianne, led the company from a classic tea importer to a tea packer. In 1966, as a private-label producer, the OTG became a branded-goods company with the creation of the MILFORD brand. Internationalisation began in 1972 with the purchase of Grosch Tee, Austria (later Milford Tee Austria). In 1988 the East Frisian tea company OnnO Behrends, Norden, became part of the OTG. In 1989 the OTG bought the tea packer Ludwig Schwarz, Buchholz (later Milford Tea). In 1990 Meßmer, Frankfurt am Main and Grettstadt, became part of the OTG. In 1992 the OTG bought the French company PAGÈS and founded OTG Lager- und Frachtkontor GmbH in Buchholz. In 1996 the Laurens Spethmann Holding was founded and took over all of the OTG's shareholdings; the third generation, Jochen, Michael and Laureen Spethmann, bought their parents' shares in the LSH, and Jochen and Michael took over the management. In 2001 the LSH acquired a 50 percent stake in a cereal manufacturer. The company states that the OTG has been creating a tea culture that connects people for over 115 years and remains, alongside ten further subsidiaries and participations, the largest subsidiary of the LSH.
