Overview

L'Asiathèque Maison des Langues du Monde is a French independent publishing house founded in the early 1970s by Christiane and Alain Thiollier. It began as an orientalist bookshop at 6 rue Christine in Paris, serving travellers, students and researchers, and moved into publishing in 1973 with the Actes du XXIXe Congrès international des orientalistes held in Paris that year. From 1985 to 1993 the publishing activity expanded under the impetus of Isabelle Delloye and the founders, who gave up the bookshop in 1993 when Christian Pourquier, former director of the Librairie française de Téhéran, retired. The catalogue is built around language-learning methods and bilingual literature. A long-running partnership with the Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (INALCO) supports didactic works and language teaching, covering Asian languages such as Chinese, Japanese, Mongolian, Hebrew, Arabic, Korean, Turkish, Bengali and Burmese, as well as Central and Eastern European, Latin American and African languages including Russian, Hungarian, modern Greek, Judeo-Spanish, Tashelhit, Quechua and Wolof. Early titles included Pierre Labrousse's Manuel d'indonésien, Exercices structuraux d'indonésien, Farida Soemargono's Dictionnaire français-indonésien and Gilles Delouche's Méthode de thaï. Alongside language manuals, L'Asiathèque publishes literary translations and collections. Its website highlights series such as Littérature de Chine, Littérature de l'Inde, Littérature coréenne, Taiwan Fiction, Novella de Chine, Liminaires, the bilingual Les bilingues grecs, the 80 mots du monde collection, Sinologie and Focus Japon, with titles priced in euros and regularly reissued. Notable publications include the bilingual Korean-French classic Histoire de dame Pak, first published in 1982 and revised by translator Marc Orange, and the 2017 anthology Taipei: Histoires au coin de la rue, translated from Chinese (Taiwan) under the direction of Gwennaël Gaffric. The house also published Chi Ta-wei's Membrane in 2015 and Wu Ming-yi's Le Magicien sur la passerelle in 2017 in the Taiwan Fiction collection. L'Asiathèque remains a private, independent French publisher based in Paris, with a catalogue spanning language learning, bilingual editions, Asian literature in translation and scholarly works on Asian civilisations.

History

L'Asiathèque was created in the early 1970s by Christiane and Alain Thiollier as an orientalist bookshop at 6 rue Christine in Paris, open to travellers, students and researchers. In 1973 the bookshop published the Actes du XXIXe Congrès international des orientalistes, held in Paris that year, and thus began its publishing activity. From 1985 to 1993 the publishing house developed under the impetus of Isabelle Delloye and the founders. The founders gave up the bookshop in 1993 when Christian Pourquier, former director of the Librairie française de Téhéran, retired. Over the following decades L'Asiathèque built a catalogue centred on language teaching and bilingual literature, supported by a partnership with the Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (INALCO) in the field of didactics and the teaching of languages, notably Asian languages (Chinese, Japanese, Mongolian, Hebrew, Arabic, Korean, Turkish, Bengali, Burmese) but also Central and Eastern European, Latin American and African languages (Russian, Hungarian, modern Greek, Judeo-Spanish, Tashelhit, Quechua, Wolof), thereby broadening its field to all the regions covered by INALCO. Among its first publications were Pierre Labrousse's Manuel d'indonésien, the Exercices structuraux d'indonésien, Farida Soemargono's Dictionnaire français-indonésien and Gilles Delouche's Méthode de thaï. The house went on to publish works such as Persan par les mots et les textes by Brigitte Simon-Hamidi and Monireh Kianvach-Kechavarzi (2002) and Les murs ont des oreilles, a thematic dictionary of Persian proverbs and expressions by the same authors (2013); Nicolas Tournadre and Sangda Dorje's Manuel de tibétain standard; Marie-Christine Varol's Manuel de judéo-espagnol; Stéphane Corcuff's Une tablette aux ancêtres (2015); and Chi Ta-wei's Membrane (2015). A multimedia collection grew out of the ALPCU project ('Apprendre les langues nationales des pays candidats à l'entrée dans l'Union européenne'), initiated in 2002, producing titles such as Découvrir et pratiquer le slovaque (2007), Découvrir et pratiquer le bulgare (2007) and Découvrir et pratiquer le slovène (2007). Its literary list includes the bilingual Korean-French classic Histoire de dame Pak, first published in 1982 and revised in depth by its translator Marc Orange, and the 2017 anthology Taipei: Histoires au coin de la rue, translated from Chinese (Taiwan) under the direction of Gwennaël Gaffric. The house also published Wu Ming-yi's Le Magicien sur la passerelle in 2017 in the Taiwan Fiction collection. Today L'Asiathèque continues as an independent French publisher based in Paris, with an active website listing series such as Littérature de Chine, Littérature de l'Inde, Littérature coréenne, Taiwan Fiction, Novella de Chine, Liminaires, Les bilingues grecs, 80 mots du monde, Sinologie and Focus Japon.
