Overview
The Lasörlinghütte is a private alpine refuge (Schutzhütte) situated at 2,350 metres above sea level in the Lasörling group of the Tyrolean Alps, in the rear Mullitztal valley known as the Glauret, within the municipality of Virgen in East Tyrol, Austria. It lies in an area where copper mining was already practised in prehistoric times. The hut was built in 1982 by Johann and Frieda Wurnitsch, who completed construction within three months and opened it on 31 July 1982 with a consecration by Pfarrer Rottländer. Since early 2021 it has been owned and run by Heidi Bender, known as the Hüttenwirtin, together with her partner Christian. Under their management the main building has received a new roof and façade, the hydroelectric power plant was modernised in 2022, and renovation work on the outbuildings took place in 2023. The hut is a hospitality business offering overnight accommodation, food and drink, and serves as a base for hikers and mountaineers exploring the Lasörlinggruppe. It is not a chain or franchise but a single, independently operated mountain inn with its own website, menu, room list and reservation system. Its remote location means supplies are brought up via a forest road from the Virgental and then by material cable car over the final 300 metres of elevation. The hut generates its own electricity from a water-powered plant, which also provides heating and hot water. With eight rooms and two mattress dormitories, it accommodates guests in simple alpine style. The Lasörlinghütte is a well-known waypoint on long-distance trails and hut-to-hut routes in the Hohe Tauern region, connecting to other refuges such as the Zupalseehütte, Speikbodenhütte, Bergeralm, Bergerseehütte, Lasnitzenhütte and Neue Reichenberger Hütte. Its appeal rests on its high alpine setting, home-style cooking and the personal hospitality of its hosts.
History
The Lasörlinghütte was built by Johann and Frieda Wurnitsch, with construction beginning on 14 April 1982 and the hut completed within three months. It was opened and consecrated on 31 July 1982 by Pfarrer Rottländer. The hut is located in the rear Mullitztal valley, known as the Glauret, an area where copper mining was carried out in prehistoric times. For nearly four decades it operated as a private mountain refuge under the Wurnitsch family. In early 2021, Heidi Bender acquired the hut and has since run it with her partner Christian. Under the new ownership, the main building received a new roof and façade, and in 2022 the technology in the hydroelectric power plant was modernised. In 2023, renovation work took place on the outbuildings. The official website notes further improvements such as a new terrace, new cushions, new curtains and smaller extensions. The hut continues to serve hikers and mountaineers in the Lasörlinggruppe, offering accommodation, food and a base for tours to peaks such as the Lasörling (3,098 m), Scheibe (2,785 m), Wohl (2,772 m) and various alpine passes.
