Overview
Larsen & Toubro Limited, widely known as L&T, is an Indian multinational engineering and infrastructure group headquartered in Mumbai. Its principal activities include engineering, procurement and construction; transportation and urban infrastructure; buildings and factories; water and effluent treatment; power generation and transmission; hydrocarbons; heavy engineering; shipbuilding; defence systems; space hardware; information technology; technology consulting; and financial services. The company serves public-sector and private-sector customers in India and undertakes large projects across the Middle East and other international markets. L&T was established in 1938 by Danish engineers Henning Holck-Larsen and Søren Kristian Toubro. The founders initially represented Danish industrial interests in India, but the disruption of trade during the Second World War forced the enterprise to move toward repair, fabrication, installation and contracting work. The company was incorporated as Larsen & Toubro Private Limited in 1946 and became a public company in 1950. Its early expansion included industrial equipment representation, machinery, fabrication and construction. The acquisition and integration of Engineering Construction & Contracts, commonly known as ECC, later gave L&T a major construction platform; ECC was eventually absorbed into the group’s construction business. Over the decades, L&T developed capabilities in sectors requiring complex project execution and industrial manufacturing. It supplied components and equipment for India’s nuclear programme, worked with the Indian Space Research Organisation, and entered defence design and development in partnership with the Defence Research and Development Organisation. These relationships helped the company build capabilities in precision engineering, strategic systems, naval platforms, missiles, launch vehicles and satellite-related manufacturing. Its construction activities expanded from domestic civil works into airports, metro rail, roads, water systems, industrial plants, refineries, offshore facilities and large buildings. The group has also repeatedly reshaped its portfolio. It exited or reduced exposure to cement, tractors, construction equipment joint ventures, medical equipment, welding products, petroleum dispensing systems, electrical and automation products, mutual funds and infrastructure-development assets. These disposals reflected a strategy of concentrating capital on engineering, construction, technology, manufacturing and selected strategic businesses. At the same time, L&T used joint ventures and acquisitions to add specialist capabilities, including its controlling investment in Mindtree in 2019 and the purchase of Chiyoda Corporation’s interest in L&T-Chiyoda in 2022. L&T is listed in India on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange, and its shares have been included in major Indian market indices. The group operates through a broad network of subsidiaries, associates, joint ventures and joint operations. Its current portfolio includes L&T Construction, L&T Energy Hydrocarbon, L&T Heavy Engineering, L&T Precision Engineering and Systems, L&T Shipbuilding, L&T Technology Services, L&T Finance, L&T Realty, L&T-SuFin and defence-related ventures. In the mid-2020s, it remained one of India’s largest private-sector engineering and construction groups and was expanding its role in defence and space manufacturing. Its international project business also reached a new scale with a reported multi-billion-dollar QatarEnergy LNG offshore compression award in 2025.
History
Larsen & Toubro began in Bombay in 1938 when Danish engineers Henning Holck-Larsen and Søren Kristian Toubro formed an enterprise to represent industrial equipment interests in India. The outbreak of the Second World War disrupted imports from Denmark and compelled the founders to diversify. L&T undertook repair, refitting and fabrication work, including maritime assignments, and established Hilda Ltd for wartime operations. The detention of foreign engineers assigned to an Indian industrial project also created an opportunity for L&T to enter plant installation and construction. The enterprise was incorporated in 1946. In the same period, the founders created Engineering Construction & Contracts, or ECC, to focus on construction contracts. L&T expanded its product representation and equipment activities, including an arrangement involving Caterpillar earthmoving equipment. It established offices in several Indian cities and acquired land at Powai in Mumbai, which became an important industrial base. L&T became a public company in December 1950 and later moved its principal corporate offices to Ballard Estate, where the former ICI House became L&T House. During the 1960s, the company created or participated in ventures involving machinery, valves, welding products and tractor-related engineering. It also developed a relationship with India’s atomic-energy establishment. L&T had been approached to fabricate critical nuclear components and by the mid-1960s had become involved in the construction of nuclear reactors. During the 1970s it became a manufacturing partner for the Indian Space Research Organisation, helping establish a position in technologically demanding national programmes. A decisive corporate change occurred in 1976, when ECC’s bid for a major Abu Dhabi airport project encountered balance-sheet limitations. ECC was merged into L&T, and its construction operations eventually became the core of L&T Construction. The division grew into the group’s largest business area, covering buildings, factories, transportation, heavy civil infrastructure, water, power transmission and distribution, and international EPC work. L&T entered defence design and development through a 1985 partnership with the Defence Research and Development Organisation. Although private production of defence equipment was initially restricted, L&T could participate in development programmes and later became a supplier of weapon systems, missiles, command-and-control equipment, engineering systems and submarines. The group created L&T Finance in 1994 and continued expanding through joint ventures in power consulting, heavy manufacturing, construction equipment, tractors, shipbuilding, metro projects and other industrial sectors. From the 2000s onward, L&T increasingly pursued portfolio discipline. It sold its cement business and divested several joint ventures and non-core operations, including interests connected with John Deere tractors, Case construction equipment, medical equipment, petroleum dispensing pumps, welding products, electrical and automation systems, mutual funds and infrastructure-development assets. The electrical and automation business was sold to Schneider Electric in a transaction agreed in 2018 and completed in 2020. L&T’s technology profile expanded with its 2019 acquisition of control of Mindtree, while its energy and engineering capabilities were consolidated through transactions such as the 2022 purchase of Chiyoda’s stake in L&T-Chiyoda. L&T also developed projects associated with the Hyderabad Metro and participated in construction of Al Rayyan Stadium in Qatar for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. In the 2020s, the group continued to emphasize infrastructure, energy transition, digital engineering, defence and space. It became a major private-sector defence manufacturer in India by revenue and pursued production of launch vehicles, satellites and military platforms. L&T was identified as a production partner for the DRDO-designed Zorawar light tank and, with Hindustan Aeronautics, participated in the planned private-sector PSLV-XL N1 launch. In 2025, the company announced a major QatarEnergy LNG offshore compression award, illustrating the scale of its international hydrocarbon EPC business.
