Overview

Laptra is an Argentine independent record label based in La Plata, founded in 2003 during the boom of the country's indie scene in the first decade of the 21st century. It was created to release the productions of the bands that formed part of an artistic collective, with notable acts including 107 Faunos, Él Mató a un policía motorizado, Koyi, Javi Punga, Reno and El Destro. The label's initial aim was to support the identity of the recorded output of a group of independent bands, in the context following Argentina's 2001 economic crisis and the deep transformations in music distribution formats and listening habits. Towards the end of the first decade of the millennium, Laptra incorporated groups from the city of Buenos Aires such as Go-Neko — from which Ex-Colorado, Bestia Bebé and Super 1 Mundial later emerged — as well as Las Ligas Menores. Inspired by underground labels such as Matador, Sarah, Creation and 99 Records, Laptra is characterized by prioritizing a particular aesthetic curation and fostering the construction of a collective identity. In recent years it has become one of the fastest-growing labels locally and with the greatest international projection, accompanying the expansion and popularity of its groups in Latin America and Spain. In 2015 the label made its first international release with "Most", a compilation album by the Spanish group Hidrogenesse; the publication, made together with the Austrohúngaro label, was supported by a Latin American tour by the Catalan duo, who in Argentina were accompanied by local Laptra groups. Between 2012 and 2017 the "Festi Laptra" was held annually, a festival bringing together the label's bands, first at Niceto and in its final editions at Ciudad Cultural Konex. In February 2024 a new "Festi Laptra" was held with great impact and sold-out tickets; the twelve active groups of the label participated, highlighting new additions such as Tigre Ulli, Nina Suarez and Media Hermana, and the solo performance of Santiago Motorizado was celebrated by the diverse audience present.
