Overview

Langage Farm is a family-owned dairy brand based in Devon, United Kingdom, known for its artisan clotted cream, ice cream, yogurts, sorbets and cheeses. The Harvey family has farmed at Langage since 1959, when they purchased the 93-acre site, and began commercial cream production in 1980 with a single pot of Jersey cream. Today the farm spans 280 acres and maintains its own herd of 250 pedigree Jersey and Guernsey cows, whose rich milk forms the base of all products. The brand operates a carbon-neutral dairy farm and an award-winning anaerobic digestion (AD) plant that converts food waste into electricity. Langage Farm products are sold through small cafes, farm shops, nationwide supermarkets, and international customers, and are stocked at numerous National Trust properties across the South West of England. The company remains privately held and family-run, with James Harvey as managing partner.

History

Langage Farm has been a working farmstead for over 900 years, with records dating back to the 11th century when Langage (Langehewis) was valued at 10 shillings and contained 1.5 plough lands (180 acres), 2 acres of meadow and 10 acres of woodland under Lord Leofric. The Harvey family's modern history began in 1948 when they moved to Lower Lutton farm and purchased their first Jersey cow. In 1959, the family moved to a new 93-acre site called Langage Farm, purchasing it from a mutual friend, Mr Honey. James Harvey, the current managing partner, was born in 1964. In 1980, the family sold their first pot of Jersey cream; to test the market, grandparents Len and Buff spent £7 on a box of cartons and borrowed a small separator, while the young lady employed to feed the calves became the first salesperson visiting local shops. In 1983, grandmother Buff, a keen cook, developed other products including the famous clotted cream, yogurts, ice cream, cottage cheese and soft cheese. The farm has since grown to 280 acres with a herd of 250 pedigree Jersey and Guernsey cows, and operates a carbon-neutral dairy farm with an award-winning anaerobic digestion plant. Products are now sold through small cafes, farm shops, nationwide supermarkets and international customers, and are stocked at National Trust properties including Arlington Court, Watersmeet, Buckland Abbey, Lydford Gorge, Saltram House, Killerton House and Coleton Fishacre.
