Overview
Landschap Overijssel is a Dutch foundation (stichting) dedicated to protecting the characteristic nature and cultural landscape of the province of Overijssel. It is one of the twelve Provincial Landschappen — the provincial landscape conservation bodies of the Netherlands — and one of the organizations responsible for landscape management (Landschapsbeheer) in the country. The foundation is affiliated with the umbrella organization LandschappenNL. The organization works on the restoration, conservation and development of nature and landscape in Overijssel. Its remit is broad: under "nature and landscape" it understands everything that contributes to the attractiveness of the landscape, not only natural beauty but also objects of scientific and/or visual-landscape importance, as well as buildings and other elements of human activity whose preservation is considered to be in the general interest. Landschap Overijssel as it exists today emerged from a 1999 merger of Stichting Overijssels Landschap, founded on 28 December 1932, and Stichting Landschapsbeheer Overijssel. The new organization consists of two foundations under a personnel union: the operating organization is Stichting Landschap Overijssel, while Stichting Het Overijssels Landschap holds the real estate. The members of the supervisory boards and the director-manager of Het Overijssels Landschap are also those of Landschap Overijssel. Both are based at Landgoed De Horte near Dalfsen. The foundation is active across the province's regions — Kop van Overijssel, IJsseldelta, Vechtdal, Salland and Twente — and its public-facing work includes nature reserves, visitor centres and windmills, walking and cycling routes, activities and courses, volunteer programmes, and fundraising such as donations, legacies, tax-free gifts and corporate friends. It publishes news and a newsletter and takes public positions on landscape issues. Notably, Landschap Overijssel owns relatively few nature areas in Salland, because many of those areas are owned and managed by Stichting IJssellandschap in Deventer.
History
Landschap Overijssel traces its origins to Stichting Overijssels Landschap, founded on 28 December 1932. That foundation was established to protect the characteristic nature and cultural landscape of the province of Overijssel. In 1999 it merged with Stichting Landschapsbeheer Overijssel to form the present-day organization. The merged entity was structured as two foundations under a personnel union: Stichting Landschap Overijssel serves as the operating organization, while Stichting Het Overijssels Landschap holds the real estate. The members of the supervisory boards and the director-manager of Het Overijssels Landschap are also those of Landschap Overijssel, and both are based at Landgoed De Horte near Dalfsen. As one of the twelve Provincial Landschappen, Landschap Overijssel belongs to the Dutch tradition of provincial landscape conservation bodies and is affiliated with the umbrella organization LandschappenNL. Its mission covers the restoration, conservation and development of nature and landscape in Overijssel. The organization interprets "nature and landscape" broadly, including not only natural beauty but also objects of scientific and/or visual-landscape importance, as well as buildings and other elements of human activity whose preservation is considered to be in the general interest. Over the decades the organization has been involved in landscape restoration and management across the province's regions, including Kop van Overijssel, IJsseldelta, Vechtdal, Salland and Twente. One example highlighted in its public communications is the Regge restoration project: the Regge rises near Diepenheim and flows some 60 kilometres before joining the Vecht near Ommen, and the area has become more robust and more beautiful over the past 20 years thanks to that project. Landschap Overijssel also manages nature reserves and estates, operates visitor centres and windmills, and offers routes, activities and courses. It engages the public through volunteering, membership (Word vriend), donations, legacies, tax-free gifts and corporate friendship schemes. A notable feature of its holdings is that it owns relatively few nature areas in Salland, because many of those areas are owned and managed by Stichting IJssellandschap in Deventer.
