Overview
Landeskrankenhilfe V.V.a.G. (LKH) is an independent German insurance company headquartered in Lüneburg, Lower Saxony. It operates as a Versicherungsverein auf Gegenseitigkeit (mutual insurance association), meaning it is owned by its policyholders rather than by shareholders. The company focuses on private health insurance (private Krankenversicherung), compulsory long-term care insurance (Pflegepflichtversicherung) and private supplementary insurance for people covered by the statutory health insurance system. LKH was founded on 9 July 1926 by farmers from the area around Lüneburg as the Krankenunterstützungsverein Lüneburg und Umgebung für selbständige Landwirte. In its founding year it already had 896 insured members. Over the following decades it expanded its business territory, first within the northern part of the Lüneburg administrative district and later, after regulatory approval, across the whole Federal Republic of Germany including Berlin. The company introduced dental tariffs in the 1930s, hospital daily allowance insurance in the 1950s, and various contribution refund schemes from 1978 onwards. In 1953 the sister company Landeslebenshilfe V.V.a.G. (LLH) was founded; its portfolio was transferred to the Frankfurter Leben group on 29 December 2023. As of 2024, LKH reported 317,404 insured persons, an average of 515 employees and gross written premiums of 957.3 million euros. Its product range includes private full health insurance for employees, self-employed persons, civil servants and civil-servant candidates, as well as physicians, pupils and students. It also offers a range of supplementary policies for statutorily insured persons, such as dental, hospital, daily sickness benefit, hospital daily allowance and long-term care supplements. The full health insurance is available in four deductible levels: no deductible and annual deductibles of 500, 900 and 1,800 euros (half for children and adolescents). In late October 2024 LKH presented its compact tariff GesundheitsUpgrade Premium at the DKM trade fair, available from December 2024. The company also cooperates with MD Medicus to offer telemedical services to its insured members at no extra cost, and provides company health insurance in two variants. LKH is not listed on a stock exchange and remains a mutual insurer. It is also known in the region for the LKH Arena in Lüneburg, opened in summer 2022, which hosts matches of the volleyball Bundesliga club SVG Lüneburg and has a capacity of up to 3,500 spectators.
History
Landeskrankenhilfe V.V.a.G. (LKH) was founded on 9 July 1926 by farmers from the area around Lüneburg as the Krankenunterstützungsverein Lüneburg und Umgebung für selbständige Landwirte. The business territory initially covered the northern part of the Lüneburg administrative district. In the founding year, 896 persons were already insured. Between 1926 and 1935 it became apparent that the contributions might not be sufficient to cover insurance benefits. Therefore, the ordinary members' meeting in August 1926 decided to introduce a small deductible, which helped the company build its first reserves. During this period the number of insured persons rose to over 10,000. In 1935 the association moved into its first own administrative building in Lüneburg, and shortly afterwards tariffs for dental treatment and dentures were introduced. During the war years, business operations could be continued with only minor restrictions. After the Second World War, the association still had about 27,000 members and achieved annual premium income of 755,000 Reichsmarks. The field service was also expanded, and by August 1949 around 40,000 persons were insured. During this time the company was renamed Landeskrankenhilfe Versicherungsverein auf Gegenseitigkeit Sitz in Lüneburg. Between 1952 and 1964, LKH grew continuously, which required new branch offices as the business territory was steadily expanded. In addition to illness cost insurance, hospital daily allowance insurance was added. Due to growth, the head office was moved in 1952 to a new administrative building at Schießgrabenstraße 8/9 in Lüneburg. In 1953, Landeslebenshilfe V.V.a.G. (LLH) was founded as a sister company of LKH. After four years of planning and construction, a new administrative building at Uelzener Straße 120 in Lüneburg was occupied in 1965, used jointly with LLH. The competent supervisory authority approved the expansion of the business territory to the entire Federal Republic of Germany, including Berlin. In full health insurance for self-employed persons and employees, tariffs with and without deductible were introduced, while supplementary tariffs were offered for statutorily insured persons. In 1978 LKH introduced a "premium refund in case of no claims" (Beitragsrückerstattung bei Schadenfreiheit), under which premiums for outpatient insurance coverage are refunded. The new building at the head office in Lüneburg was occupied in 1992. In 2001, the "premium refund for cost-conscious behaviour" (Beitragsrückerstattung für kostenbewusstes Verhalten) was added. Since 2014, LKH has offered a "premium refund in case of no benefits" (Beitragsrückerstattung bei Leistungsfreiheit) for the new tariffs A/S/Z, under which insured persons can receive up to 40% of the premium for outpatient and dental insurance coverage if they do not claim benefits. In summer 2022, the LKH Arena in Lüneburg opened, serving as a venue for games of the volleyball Bundesliga club SVG Lüneburg and offering space for up to 3,500 spectators. Until December 2023, the life insurance company Landeslebenshilfe (LLH), also operated in the legal form of a mutual insurance association, was a sister company of Landeskrankenhilfe. On 29 December 2023, the portfolio of LLH was transferred to the Frankfurter Leben group. As of 2024, LKH counted 317,404 insured persons, employed an average of 515 staff and recorded 957.3 million euros in gross written premiums. In late October 2024, LKH presented its compact tariff GesundheitsUpgrade Premium at the DKM trade fair, which covers outpatient, inpatient and dental services and is available from December 2024.
