Overview
Landell Mills is an international development consultancy headquartered in the United Kingdom and Ireland. It describes itself as one of the world's leading international development consultancies, providing communities, economies and environments with the means and opportunities to grow. The company works with national, bilateral and multilateral agencies, including the European Union, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, and has implemented contracts across Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe and the former Soviet states. The firm's origins date back to the mid-1970s, when John Landell Mills and his associates began carrying out research and providing agricultural management services in sub-Saharan Africa. It was incorporated in 1981 and grew steadily over its first two decades, expanding its service portfolio to include technical assistance on agriculture, fisheries and rural development. In the 1990s it moved into Eastern Europe and the former Soviet states, diversified into natural resource management (notably in China and South East Asia) and private sector development (prominently in Africa and the Near East). In 1998 it joined forces with TDI Group, formerly the Trade Development Institute of Ireland, deepening its offer in export and investment promotion. By 2009 the two companies had merged under the single Landell Mills brand. Today Landell Mills organises its work across five sector service headings and five thematic service types. Its areas of expertise span markets, enterprise and trade; agriculture, fisheries, food security and nutrition; environment, water, climate change and disaster risk reduction; and governance. The company works out of both Ireland and the UK, with a permanent staff of 55 and an average turnover of €25 million/$30 million, positioning itself as one of Europe's leading independent employer-managed international consulting companies. Its stated mission is to assist clients to participate actively in the global economy while protecting fragile environments and vulnerable communities, with sustainability at the heart of its work. Landell Mills has been recognised with various awards in Ireland and the UK and is certified under ISO 37001 for its anti-bribery management system. Its management team includes directors and divisional managers covering agriculture, fisheries, food security and nutrition; frameworks; and monitoring, evaluation and learning. Representative assignments include the Gambia Technical Assistance in support of the State and Resilience Building Contract 3 (2022–2024) and Africa RISE, a demand-driven regional technical assistance facility funded by the European Union and implemented from 2020–2024 by a consortium led by Landell Mills.
History
The origins of Landell Mills date back to the mid-1970s, when John Landell Mills and his associates first started carrying out research and providing agricultural management services in sub-Saharan Africa. The company was founded in 1975 and was originally established to carry out research and provide management services in the agricultural sector. After incorporation in 1981, Landell Mills grew steadily during its first 20 years as it increased its services portfolio to include technical assistance to a range of international clients on all aspects of agriculture, fisheries and rural development throughout Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. Later in the 1990s, Landell Mills expanded into Eastern Europe and the former Soviet states, while also diversifying into natural resource management, notably in China and South East Asia, and private sector development, most prominently in Africa and the Near East. In 1998, Landell Mills joined forces with TDI Group, formerly the Trade Development Institute of Ireland, which deepened the company's service offer, especially in export and investment promotion, as it sought to promote the Irish tiger growth model in emerging economies. By 2009, the two companies had merged under the one Landell Mills brand and, after a period of restructure and reorganisation, the company now provides services across five sector service headings and five thematic service types. Working out of both Ireland and the UK, with a permanent staff of 55 and an average turnover of €25 million/$30 million, Landell Mills has emerged as one of Europe's leading independent employer-managed international consulting companies. Landell Mills has worked in almost all developing and emerging economies for various national, bilateral, and multilateral agencies. Its projects span markets, enterprise, and trade; agriculture, fisheries, food security and nutrition; environment, water, climate change and disaster risk reduction; and governance. The company's success in delivering international cooperation services has been recognised with various awards in Ireland and the UK, and it is certified under ISO 37001 for its anti-bribery management system.
