Overview

Land & Forst (stylised LAND & FORST) is a German weekly agricultural trade journal aimed primarily at full-time and part-time farming businesses in Lower Saxony. Its first issue appeared on 1 May 1848 under the title Landwirthschaftliche Zeitung, making it one of the oldest continuously published agricultural titles in Germany. It has carried its present name since issue 51/52 of 1997. According to IVW data for the fourth quarter of 2025, its distributed circulation is 39,490 copies and its sold circulation 38,954 copies. The publisher states that the paper reaches more than 170,000 readers weekly and 86.1% of agricultural holdings in its distribution area. The editorial profile covers current developments in arable farming and livestock husbandry, energy, farm management, agricultural policy at EU, federal and state level, and forestry topics. Every issue includes a section titled "Leben auf dem Land" (Life in the Countryside) with advice on health, gardening and cooking for rural households. The brand also operates a digital portfolio: the website landundforst.de, an e-paper edition, a newsletter sent three times a week, and social-media channels. The website recorded 147,193 monthly visits according to IVW data for June 2025, and the 2026 media kit lists more than 27,000 newsletter subscribers. The title's history reflects the consolidation of Lower Saxony's agricultural press. On 1 January 2006 the Landwirtschaftskammer Hannover and the Landwirtschaftskammer Weser-Ems merged to form the Landwirtschaftskammer Niedersachsen. In that context three Lower Saxon farming titles were combined: Landwirtschaftsblatt Weser-Ems, Das Landvolk (the newsletter of the Landvolk Niedersachsen farmers' association) and LAND & FORST. On 1 June 2006 they merged with issue 22 of LAND & FORST into a single journal for the whole of Lower Saxony — today's LAND & FORST. A commemorative issue marking the 150th anniversary described the evolution from a publication shaped by associations and professional bodies into a broader weekly magazine, expanding its focus on technical advice, agricultural policy opinion-forming, home economics and family topics, social questions of rural areas, and service and reader forums. Today Land & Forst is published in Hanover and remains closely identified with Lower Saxony's farming community, combining print, e-paper and digital news under the agrarheute umbrella. Its website publishes daily news on livestock, arable farming, machinery, farm business and rural life, alongside premium "PLUS" content for subscribers.

History

The history of Land & Forst reaches back to the Landwirthschaftliche Zeitung, first published on 1 May 1848. From 1869 it appeared as the Hannoversche landwirtschaftliche Zeitung, and from 1881 as the Hannoversche land- und forstwirtschaftliche Zeitung. The present title LAND & FORST has been used since 1997 (issue 51/52 of that volume). For much of its existence the paper was shaped by associations and professional bodies. A commemorative issue for its 150th anniversary described the development from a club- and profession-oriented newspaper into a broader weekly magazine. Over time it expanded its focus on technical advice, agricultural policy opinion-forming, home economics and family topics, social questions of rural areas, and service and reader forums. A decisive turning point came with the reorganisation of Lower Saxony's agricultural institutions. On 1 January 2006 the Landwirtschaftskammer Hannover in Hanover and the Landwirtschaftskammer Weser-Ems in Oldenburg merged to form the Landwirtschaftskammer Niedersachsen. In that context the three Lower Saxon agricultural titles were consolidated: Landwirtschaftsblatt Weser-Ems, Das Landvolk (the newsletter of Landvolk Niedersachsen, the state farmers' association) and LAND & FORST. On 1 June 2006 they merged with issue 22 of LAND & FORST into a single journal for the whole of Lower Saxony — today's LAND & FORST. In the digital era the brand added landundforst.de, an e-paper edition, a newsletter sent three times a week and social-media channels. According to IVW data for June 2025 the website recorded 147,193 monthly visits, and the 2026 media kit lists more than 27,000 newsletter subscribers. Print circulation remains substantial: IVW 4/2025 reports a distributed circulation of 39,490 and a sold circulation of 38,954. The publisher states that the title reaches more than 170,000 readers weekly and 86.1% of agricultural holdings in its distribution area.
