Overview

Lampe & Schwartze Group is a German insurance group headquartered in Bremen, with roots reaching back to 1858. It describes itself as Germany's market leader for complex risks and special coverage concepts, offering companies customised risk management services and tailor-made insurance solutions. The group operates through three business segments — Underwriting, Broking and Services — and serves both local and global clients, from medium-sized car dealers to major shipping companies and multinational offshore wind farms. It is a member of the UnisonSteadfast international network of brokers, giving it worldwide reach. The modern company was formed in 1998 through the merger of two long-established Bremen insurance firms: Lampe & Schierenbeck, founded in 1858 as a private insurer of seagoing vessels and cargo, and Buse & Schwartze, founded in 1908 with a focus on coffee and food-sector insurance. The merged entity, Lampe & Schwartze KG, is today one of the ten largest medium-sized, owner-operated insurance brokers in Germany, employing more than 370 people. It is led by five personally liable partners (Komplementäre): Matthias Böhm, André Grobien, Thomas Haukje, Arne Klarmann and Dr. Patrick Wendisch. The group's service portfolio spans insurance brokerage, underwriting access, and comprehensive claims and risk management. Its Claims Services unit specialises in transport logistics, handling everything from initial damage assessment to settlement and recourse for clients in commodity trading, insurance, shipping and logistics. Its Risk Management unit analyses corporate assets and processes from an insurance perspective, covering fire protection, business interruption, cyber security and supply chain management. Lampe & Schwartze has a notable role in specialty marine and war-risk coverage. Since April 2011 it has handled the operational and administrative management of the German War Cover consortium, which for the first time offered German insurers' cover for cargo ships against war, piracy and terrorism damage. Since early 2019 it has offered its own cyber insurance for shipping companies, covering damage from malicious attacks including cyberattacks on ship or fleet IT systems. The company is based in the so-called Versicherungsbörse office complex on the Teerhof peninsula in Bremen's Neustadt district.

History

The origins of the Lampe & Schwartze Group can be traced back to 1858, when a group of merchants from Bremen who used their own resources to insure seagoing vessels and their cargo founded the company Lampe & Schierenbeck. This small, private risk carrier for maritime insurance would, over more than a century and a half, grow into a major player on the German insurance market. In 1908, also in Bremen, the insurance company Buse & Schwartze was founded, with insurance focuses in the coffee and food sectors. In 1998 the two long-established Bremen insurance firms merged to form Lampe & Schwartze KG. The merged group is counted among the ten largest insurance companies in Germany and among the ten biggest medium-sized, owner-operated insurance brokers. Since April 2011, Lampe & Schwartze has held the operational and administrative management of the German War Cover consortium, through which German insurers for the first time offered cover for cargo ships against damage from war, piracy and terrorism. Since the beginning of 2019, Lampe & Schwartze has offered its own cyber insurance for shipping companies, covering damage resulting from malicious attacks, in particular cyberattacks on the IT systems of ships or shipping fleets. The company is headquartered in Bremen in the office complex known as the Versicherungsbörse, located on the Teerhof, a peninsula between the Weser and the Kleine Weser in Bremen's Neustadt district. As of 2025 the insurance company is led by five personally liable partners (Komplementäre): Matthias Böhm, André Grobien, Thomas Haukje, Arne Klarmann and Dr. Patrick Wendisch. The group organises itself into three business segments: Underwriting, Broking and Services. It employs more than 370 people and remains true to its Hanseatic origins in its thinking and conduct.
