Overview

Laiteries Réunies Société coopérative (LRG) is a Swiss agri-food cooperative headquartered in Plan-les-Ouates, in the canton of Geneva. Founded in 1911 through the merger of two local dairy cooperatives, it is one of the eleven regional dairy federations of Switzerland. The group operates through several subsidiaries across four main business areas: dairy products, meat products, distribution/trading, and logistics. Its dairy division includes Val d'Arve SA and Nutrifrais SA, known for soft cheese specialties, Gruyère ripening and marketing, and yogurt, desserts (including the Tamtam brand) and fresh cheese. The meat division, comprising Del Maître SA and Maître Boucher Sàrl, focuses on industrial meat production for retail and the food industry. Distribution is handled by Vivadis SA, W. Ottiger AG and Chäs Max GmbH, while LRG Logistics SA provides refrigerated transport and logistics, mainly within Switzerland. The cooperative is part of the Fédération des Laiteries Réunies de Genève, which unites around 230 milk producers in Geneva, Vaud and adjacent areas. As of the official website, the group has over 300 employees, 542 cooperative members (sociétaires), 81 producers and processes 36 million litres of milk. The group is active nationally and for export, and is committed to sustainable development and responsible agriculture.

History

The history of Laiteries Réunies begins in 1911, when two local dairy cooperatives in Geneva merged to form Laiteries Genevoises Réunies. This new entity was established in the Acacias district of Geneva with the aim of ensuring milk distribution for the entire canton. In 1923, the cooperative expanded its milk collection area to include Vaud producers near Geneva, and changed its name to Laiteries Réunies. In 1926, the group diversified into meat products under the brand 'Au Paysan', adding fresh meat marketing and charcuterie production. In 1933, the re-establishment of the free zones extended the economic area around Geneva, allowing the federation to source milk from neighbouring France; French producers in the free zones joined the cooperative with the same rights and duties as Swiss producers. In 1958, the company created its first milk carton (berlingot). From the second half of the 1960s, the group further diversified and split production across different plants. In 1982, LRG moved its headquarters to Plan-les-Ouates. In 1998, the group was restructured into a holding company, LRG Groupe SA, with each subsidiary focusing on its specialty. Subsequently, the company expanded from its strong base in western Switzerland into German-speaking Switzerland through several acquisitions. In 2009, 60% of Nutrifrais SA was sold to Emmi AG, but the stake was bought back in 2013. In 2014, LRG participated in the export company Lactofama. On 12 July 2016, LRG Groupe SA was deleted through a merger; its assets and liabilities were taken over by Laiteries Réunies Société coopérative according to the merger agreement of 18 May 2016 and the balance sheet as of 31 December 2015. Today, the cooperative remains active as one of the eleven regional dairy federations in Switzerland, with over 300 employees and a commitment to sustainable development.
