Overview

Laboratoires Bailleul Portugal, S.A. is the Portuguese arm of Laboratoires Bailleul, a family-owned pharmaceutical and dermo-cosmetic group founded in France in 1949. The Portuguese entity is registered in Lisbon and operates within the group's international network of 16 subsidiaries covering 56 countries. Its business follows the parent company's core focus: developing and marketing pharmaceutical products, food supplements and dermo-cosmetic products, particularly in dermatology and hair care. The group's heritage dates to 1939, when pharmacist Jean Bailleul and physician Alphonse Bigou met and began collaborating on research into cystine and its applications in dermatology. That work led to the creation of Laboratoires Bailleul in 1949. Today the group holds around 250 marketing authorizations for medicinal products worldwide and remains 100% family-owned. In Portugal, the subsidiary distributes and promotes Bailleul's portfolio, which includes brands and product lines for sensitive skin, hair loss, dandruff, hygiene and women's health. Typical offerings include food supplements (tablets and powders), fortifying and sebo-regulating shampoos, and other dermo-cosmetic care products. The Portuguese operation is part of the group's strategy of local presence in European and international markets, supported by the parent company's dermatological expertise of more than 75 years.

History

The history of Laboratoires Bailleul began in 1939, on the eve of World War II, when pharmacist Jean Bailleul and physician Alphonse Bigou met. After the armistice, Jean Bailleul worked in a pharmacy while Alphonse Bigou practiced as a general practitioner. Interested in research, Bigou became a student of Lucie Randon, Secretary General of the Scientific Society of Food Hygiene and the second woman to join the Academy of Medicine after Marie Curie. Randon and Bigou collaborated on the study of cystine and its applications in dermatology. L-cystine, a sulphur amino acid and stable oxidised form of cysteine, is an essential component of keratin in hair and nails and plays a major role in hair growth. The enthusiasm generated by these discoveries was one of the deciding factors that led the two friends to create Laboratoires Bailleul in 1949. Founded in 1949, Laboratoires Bailleul is a pharmaceutical company specialised in the development and marketing of pharmaceutical products, food supplements and dermo-cosmetic products. The company is committed to developing solutions for improving patients' quality of life. Over more than 75 years it has built dermatological expertise, particularly for sensitive skins, hair problems and women's health. The group operates internationally through 16 subsidiaries and is present in 56 countries. It holds approximately 250 marketing authorizations for medicinal products worldwide and remains a 100% family business. Laboratoires Bailleul Portugal, S.A. is the Portuguese subsidiary, based in Lisbon, and forms part of this international network. The Portuguese entity carries the group's portfolio into the local market, covering food supplements, shampoos and dermo-cosmetic care, and participates in the group's broader mission in dermatology and personal care.
