Overview
LAB14 is an international technology group focused on micro- and nanotechnology, headquartered in Heidelberg, Germany. It unites highly specialized companies with complementary expertise across fabrication, patterning, analysis and metrology, acting as a strategic platform that strengthens its companies through long-term investment, cross-company collaboration and shared technological direction. The group's companies cover different but connected steps along micro- and nanotechnology value chains, and LAB14 actively fosters cooperation across them to accelerate innovation and market readiness. Its technologies serve demanding applications in semiconductor manufacturing, advanced research and industrial production. The group was founded in 2022 as a subsidiary of RSBG SE, itself part of the RAG-Stiftung (RAG Foundation). It emerged from the RSBG Advanced Manufacturing Technologies GmbH (RSBG AMT), one of five clusters of RSBG SE established in 2019, and was subsequently renamed LAB14 GmbH. LAB14 employs more than 1,200 people and operates 28 locations across Europe, the Americas and Asia, serving more than 2,300 customers. LAB14 is organized into four business groups that share competence in one network. Its portfolio companies include Heidelberg Instruments, a global leader in direct-write lithography systems for micro- and nanopatterning, with over 1,500 systems installed in more than 50 countries; Nanoscribe, a developer and producer of 3D printing systems based on two-photon polymerization and a 2007 spin-off of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology; Nanosurf, a Swiss maker of atomic force microscopes founded in 1997; Amcoss, an Austrian producer of wafer process equipment and components for the semiconductor industry; GenISys, a provider of process control software for micro- and nanofabrication; Notion Systems, specialized in inkjet printing systems for electronic displays, printed circuit boards, semiconductors and optical 3D components; SPECS Surface Nano Analysis, focused on surface analysis and scanning probe microscopy tools under the brands SPECS, Focus, Nanonis and Enviro; and 40-30 SAS, a French provider of maintenance, cleaning and repair services for vacuum technology, electronics and high-purity environments. As a strategic platform, LAB14 positions itself as a long-term investor and coordinator of complementary micro- and nanotechnology businesses, combining the agility of medium-sized specialists with the shared technological direction and cross-company collaboration of a larger group.
History
LAB14 was founded in 2022 as a subsidiary of RSBG SE, making it part of the RAG-Stiftung (RAG Foundation). The group emerged from RSBG Advanced Manufacturing Technologies GmbH (RSBG AMT), which had been established in 2019 as one of five clusters of RSBG SE. Following its formation, the entity was renamed LAB14 GmbH and positioned as an international technology group focused on micro- and nanotechnology. The group was built by bringing together several specialized companies with complementary expertise along micro- and nanotechnology value chains. Among its constituent businesses, Nanosurf was founded in 1997 in Switzerland as a developer and manufacturer of atomic force microscopes for science and industry. Nanoscribe was founded in 2007 as a spin-off of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and grew into a provider of additive manufacturing at the nano- and microscale based on two-photon polymerization. Heidelberg Instruments established itself as a global leader in direct-write lithography systems for micro- and nanopatterning, with a portfolio spanning compact tabletop systems for prototyping and R&D to high-end photomask manufacturing equipment for high-volume industrial production, and with over 1,500 systems installed in more than 50 countries. Other group companies include Amcoss GmbH, based in Austria, which produces wafer process equipment and components for the semiconductor industry, including systems for coating, cleaning and etching as well as cooling and heat exchange systems; GenISys GmbH, which offers process control software for micro- and nanofabrication with a focus on lithography processes, data modeling and metrology for the semiconductor and MEMS industries; Notion Systems GmbH, specialized in inkjet printing systems for the production of electronic displays, printed circuit boards, semiconductors and optical 3D components; SPECS Surface Nano Analysis GmbH, which focuses on surface analysis and scanning probe microscopy tools under its brands SPECS, Focus, Nanonis and Enviro, including surface analysis under vacuum conditions and XPS analysis; and 40-30 SAS, based in France, which provides maintenance, cleaning and repair of vacuum technology, electronics and high-purity environments, as well as process management software and a platform for purchasing spare parts for industries including semiconductors, aerospace and energy. In July 2025, Notion Systems and Osiris International announced their merger, with the company name remaining "Notion Systems." As of May 2026, LAB14 GmbH maintained the subsidiaries listed above. The group employs more than 1,200 people and operates 28 locations across Europe, the Americas and Asia, serving more than 2,300 customers.
