Overview

La Quinta Franchising LLC is the franchising entity behind La Quinta Inns & Suites, a midscale hotel brand in the United States that is owned by Wyndham Hotels & Resorts. The La Quinta story began in 1968 in San Antonio, Texas, where entrepreneur Sam Barshop opened the first La Quinta Motor Inn; the name refers to a Spanish-style inn located 'just around the corner' from the Alamo. The chain grew through the 1970s and 1980s as a value-oriented lodging operator concentrated in the southern and western United States, and it became a publicly traded company before being acquired by Meditrust in the late 1990s. In 2000 the brand was taken private by the Blackstone Group, which invested in refurbishment and repositioned La Quinta as a midscale, primarily franchised brand. Blackstone spun the company back onto the public markets in 2014 as La Quinta Holdings Inc. In 2018, Wyndham Worldwide completed the spin-off of its hotel business as Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, and separately acquired the La Quinta franchise and management business from CorePoint Lodging (the real-estate spin-off of La Quinta Holdings) for a reported $1.95 billion. Since then, La Quinta has operated as one of Wyndham's flagship brands, with roughly 900-plus hotels and a heavy concentration of franchised properties across the United States, plus a growing international footprint in Canada, Mexico, Latin America, the Middle East and Turkey. La Quinta Franchising LLC is the contracting and franchise-support vehicle through which independent owners license the La Quinta name, systems and loyalty-program access. The brand positions itself in the midscale segment, competing with the likes of Best Western, Comfort Inn and Holiday Inn Express, and is known for its 'Here for You' service promise, free breakfast, pet-friendly policies at many locations and the Wyndham Rewards loyalty program. Its properties range from highway-side inns to urban and airport hotels, and the brand has been expanding into upper-midscale formats such as La Quinta by Wyndham with upgraded amenities. The franchising LLC is not separately listed; it sits within Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, which trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker WH.

History

La Quinta was founded in 1968 by San Antonio entrepreneur Sam Barshop, who opened the first La Quinta Motor Inn in his home city. The name was chosen because the first property sat 'just around the corner' from the Alamo, echoing the Spanish phrase for such a location. The chain expanded across Texas and the Sun Belt during the 1970s, targeting business travelers and road-trippers with a standardized, value-priced product. La Quinta Motor Inns went public in the 1970s and grew steadily through the 1980s, adding locations across the southern and western United States. In the late 1990s the company was acquired by Meditrust, a real-estate investment trust, in a deal that combined lodging and healthcare assets. That structure proved unstable, and in 2000 the Blackstone Group took La Quinta private. Under Blackstone, the brand was repositioned as a midscale chain with a strong franchise model, and the company invested in property renovations and a refreshed prototype. Blackstone returned La Quinta to the public markets in 2014 as La Quinta Holdings Inc., which then spun off its real-estate assets into CorePoint Lodging in 2018. Also in 2018, Wyndham Worldwide completed the separation of its hotel division into Wyndham Hotels & Resorts and simultaneously acquired La Quinta's franchise and management business from CorePoint for approximately $1.95 billion. La Quinta became one of Wyndham's largest brands by room count, with a franchised-heavy portfolio and access to the Wyndham Rewards loyalty program. The brand has since expanded internationally, including in Mexico, Latin America, the Middle East and Turkey, and has introduced upgraded upper-midscale prototypes under the La Quinta by Wyndham banner. La Quinta Franchising LLC serves as the franchise contracting entity within the Wyndham corporate structure.
