Overview
La Parola del Passato is a scholarly journal dedicated to the field of Altertumswissenschaft (ancient studies), published in Naples, Italy. It was founded in 1946 by a group of scholars, among whom the ancient historian Giovanni Pugliese Carratelli played a leading role. Since 1955 the journal has carried the subtitle Rivista di studi antichi (formerly Rivista di studi classici). It is issued once a year and contains both articles and reviews. Initially contributions were only in Italian; today articles in other languages are also accepted. The journal is directed by a three-member board comprising Pia de Fidio, Gianfranco Fiaccadori and Valeria Gigante Lanzara. It is published in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici in Naples and has been distributed since its founding by the publisher Macchiaroli in Naples. The journal's name derives from a quotation from Friedrich Nietzsche's Untimely Meditations. In the preface to the first volume, the editors set out their programme of promoting the humanae litterae in a decidedly neo-humanist sense: the aim of ancient studies was not limited to mere erudition but included the promotion of moral and aesthetic education in the spirit of Goethe, with ancient culture and its 'classical' forms of thought continuing to play a central role. The ISSN of the journal is 0031-2355. Today the journal is available through the publisher Leo S. Olschki Editore.
History
La Parola del Passato was founded in 1946 by a group of scholars, among whom the ancient historian Giovanni Pugliese Carratelli played a decisive role. The journal's name was taken from a quotation in Friedrich Nietzsche's Untimely Meditations: 'The saying of the past is always an oracle: only as builders of the future, as knowers of the present, will you understand it.' In the preface to the first volume, the editorial board set out its programme, which consisted in promoting the humanae litterae. This aim was presented in a decidedly neo-humanist sense: the goal of research in ancient studies was not limited to mere erudition. Rather, the tasks of ancient studies included in particular the promotion of moral and aesthetic education in the spirit of Goethe. Within this understanding of education, ancient culture with its 'classical' forms of thought was to continue to play a central role. Since 1955 the journal has borne the subtitle Rivista di studi antichi (previously: Rivista di studi classici). From 1965 until his death in 2010, Pugliese Carratelli served as director; since 2011 the journal has been led by the current three-member board. The journal is published in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici in Naples. It has been distributed since its founding by the publisher Macchiaroli in Naples. It appears once a year and contains, besides articles, also reviews. Initially the contributions were only in Italian; today contributions in other languages are also accepted. The ISSN is 0031-2355. Today the journal is available through the publisher Leo S. Olschki Editore.
