Overview

La Galerie Rouge is a photography gallery located in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, France. It was originally opened on 10 June 1975 by Agathe Gaillard as Galerie Agathe Gaillard, and is recognized as the first gallery in Paris devoted exclusively to the art of photography. The gallery was founded with the aim of establishing photography as a specific art form within contemporary art. Its first exhibition featured American photographer Ralph Gibson. Agathe Gaillard was encouraged by photographer friends including Jean-Philippe Charbonnier, Henri Cartier-Bresson, André Kertész, Édouard Boubat, and Robert Doisneau. The gallery has almost always presented photographers whom Agathe Gaillard personally met, and its resources have come almost systematically from the sale of prints, helping to build major public and private collections. In 2017, Agathe Gaillard left the gallery's direction, and it was purchased by banker David Azéma. Under a new artistic director, Fiona Sanjabi, the gallery presented exhibitions such as 'Hommage à la beauté' in September 2017 and 'De la couleur' by Claude Iverné in November 2017, followed by Manuel Álvarez Bravo and Colette Alvarez Urbajtel in February 2018 and Claude Iverné: Nubie in September 2018. In May 2020, the gallery changed its name to La Galerie Rouge, referring to the vermilion red color of its façade. Today, La Galerie Rouge is directed by Agathe Cancellieri, a doctor in the history of photography trained in the art market in the United States. The gallery presents fine photographic prints and images that transform our relationship to the world. It is the exclusive representative in France of the Estates of Édouard Boubat, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Jean-Philippe Charbonnier, Barbara Crane, and Jill Freedman, and also supports the work of established and emerging contemporary photographers. Represented photographers include Martine Barrat, Claude Batho, Clarissa Bonet, Édouard Boubat, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Jean-Philippe Charbonnier, Luc Choquer, Barbara Crane, Benjamin Deroche, Sandra Eleta, Jean-Pierre Evrard, Jean-Michel Fauquet, Jill Freedman, Gaspar Gasparian, Kenneth Josephson, Erica Lennard, Sheila Metzner, Marie-Paule Nègre, Joseph Sterling, and Colette Urbajtel. The gallery also engages in off-site exhibitions, such as 'Martine Barrat. Soul of the City' at Espace Van Gogh in Arles from 6 July to 4 October 2026.

History

La Galerie Rouge was originally opened on 10 June 1975 by Agathe Gaillard as Galerie Agathe Gaillard, at 3 rue du Pont-Louis-Philippe in the Marais district of Paris, in a space belonging to the City of Paris. Agathe Gaillard was encouraged by photographer friends Jean-Philippe Charbonnier, Henri Cartier-Bresson, André Kertész, Édouard Boubat, and Robert Doisneau. The gallery was the first in Paris devoted solely to the art of photography, with the objective of bringing photography into contemporary art as a specific art form. The first exhibitor was American photographer Ralph Gibson. Agathe Gaillard almost always presented photographers whom she had personally met. The gallery's resources came almost systematically from the sale of prints, and it helped major public and private collections to be built. From May to September 2015, an exhibition titled 'À découvrir' was held, devoted to the last three photographers discovered by Agathe Gaillard: Juliette Diemer, Hervé Baudat, and Céline Vomiero. In February–March 2017, the last memorial exhibition took place, with photographs by Édouard Boubat, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Jean-Philippe Charbonnier, Luc Choquer, Ralph Gibson, and André Kertész. In June 2017, Agathe Gaillard made her final hanging, with photographs by the winner of the Henri Cartier-Bresson Prize, Claude Iverné. In 2017, Agathe Gaillard left the gallery's direction, and it was purchased by banker David Azéma. In September 2017, with the new owner David Azéma, she presented, under the direction of a new artistic director, Fiona Sanjabi, the exhibition 'Hommage à la beauté', then in November 2017 an exhibition titled 'De la couleur' with photographs by Claude Iverné. These were followed in February 2018 by Manuel Álvarez Bravo and Colette Alvarez Urbajtel, and in September 2018 by Claude Iverné: Nubie. In May 2020, the gallery changed its name to La Galerie Rouge, referring to the vermilion red color of its façade.
