Overview
La Ferroviaria Italiana (LFI) is an Italian transport company headquartered in Arezzo, Tuscany. Founded in 1914 as Soc. Anonima La Ferroviaria Italiana, it was established to build and operate the Arezzo–Sinalunga railway line, which entered service in the 1930s. After World War II damage and a complete reactivation in 1949, LFI took over the management of the Casentino railway (Arezzo–Stia) from Soc. Veneta in 1950. In 1969, public shareholders entered the capital, starting with the Province of Arezzo, followed by the Municipality of Arezzo and later other public entities. In December 2002, the two main shareholders, the Provinces of Arezzo and Siena, sold 30% of shares to a group of companies including RATP (Paris), ATAF (Florence), and TRAIN (Siena). Due to non-voting shares, RATP holds de facto control with about 30% of votes. In 2005, the group was split into TFT (Trasporto Ferroviario Toscano), the railway undertaking, and Rete Ferroviaria Toscana SpA (RFT), the infrastructure manager owning and operating two standard-gauge railway lines in central Italy. LFI also operates a number of bus lines with approximately 150 buses. The group's mission is to ensure the right to mobility for the local population, providing good quality service while optimizing resources and ensuring health, safety, and ethical work principles. The LFI Group and TFT hold certifications from SGS Italia S.p.A., including ISO 9001:2015 for quality and UNI EN ISO 45001:2023 for safety. The company is headquartered at Via Guido Monaco 37, Arezzo, with share capital of €3,163,752.00.
History
La Ferroviaria Italiana (LFI) was founded on 30 January 1914 as Soc. Anonima La Ferroviaria Italiana, obtaining the concession to build the Arezzo–Sinalunga railway line, which entered service in the 1930s. After a suspension due to war damage and complete reactivation in 1949, in 1950 LFI took over from Soc. Veneta the management of the Casentino railway, Arezzo–Stia. In 1969, public shareholders entered the share capital: first the Province of Arezzo alone, then also the Municipality of Arezzo, and subsequently, through several capital increases, other public entities. In December 2002, the two shareholders, the Provinces of Arezzo and Siena, sold 30% of shares to a group of companies including RATP (Paris), ATAF (Florence), and TRAIN (Siena). The RFT network includes the line from Arezzo to Stia, built in 1888, 44 km long, and the line to Sinalunga, built in 1930, 40 km long. Both lines are electrified at 3000 V DC, the standard in Italy, and both are now wholly owned subsidiaries. TFT operates passenger and freight traffic on these two standard-gauge lines. In 2006, TFT carried a total of 1.18 million passengers on both lines. Since 14 March 2001, TFT has held a license as a public railway undertaking for passenger and freight traffic on the network of the state infrastructure manager Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), and a safety certificate first issued on 31 January 2005 and last extended on 22 November 2007 to operate on RFI lines between Livorno, Pisa, Bologna, and Chiusi. In 2008, freight traffic on RFI lines amounted to 8,172 train-kilometers. As of 2022, TFT's fleet consists of three Jazz multiple units, four ETT multiple units, three FS ALe 801 and ALe 940 trains, and two D.341 diesel locomotives. In 2013, from February, an FS ATR 365 multiple unit intended for Sardinia underwent test runs on the line to Arezzo. The LFI Group and TFT have obtained certifications from SGS Italia S.p.A., including ISO 9001:2015 for quality and UNI EN ISO 45001:2023 for safety.
