Overview
La Chablisienne is a winegrowers' cooperative founded in 1923 in the Chablis vineyard in Burgundy, France, on the initiative of Abbé Balitrand, when several winegrowers joined together to face the economic difficulties of the time and to sell their wines. Until the mid-1950s, members delivered their production to La Chablisienne, which carried out the blending and sold mainly to the wholesale trade. The house later chose to take in harvests as musts, a distinctive practice that allowed full control of vinifications. Its range includes Petit Chablis, and it has been the heir of the Château Grenouilles estate since 2003.
History
The history begins in 1923, when a few winegrowers, on the initiative of Abbé Balitrand, joined together to face the economic difficulties of the time and created a cooperative cellar in the heart of the Chablis vineyard in Burgundy, with the aim of selling their wines. Until the mid-1950s, members delivered their production to La Chablisienne, which then carried out the blending and sold mainly to the wholesale trade. Wishing to go further and shape its style, La Chablisienne decided to take in harvests in the form of musts, a particularity that became the hallmark of the house and allowed total control of vinifications. In permanent exchange, winegrowers and technicians link the quality of the musts to the plots where the grapes originate, and thus develop the technical orientations to be given. La Chablisienne, still driven by a pioneering spirit, has continued to meet challenges in areas as diverse as viticulture, vinification, human resources and commerce. The estate of Château Grenouilles, located in the heart of the hill of the Grands Crus at the foot of the Grenouilles hillside, is an exceptional and unique ensemble in Chablis, of which La Chablisienne has been the heir since 2003.
