Overview
La 2 is Spain’s second national public television channel and is owned and operated by Televisión Española, the television division of the state-owned broadcaster Radiotelevisión Española. It began regular broadcasting on 15 November 1966 as Spain’s second regular television service, initially using UHF frequencies and therefore commonly known as UHF. The channel was introduced during a period when TVE held a national television monopoly, and its early technical reach was limited to selected cities and households equipped to receive UHF signals. From the beginning, the service developed a different role from TVE’s first channel. Rather than concentrating primarily on mass-market entertainment and general-interest programming, it became a home for classical music, theatre, documentaries, educational material, experimental formats and films. During its formative years, the channel provided opportunities for filmmakers and television creators associated with Spain’s official film school, helping establish a more innovative and culturally oriented identity. Its programming was initially short and largely confined to evenings, but coverage gradually expanded to Spain’s major population centres and eventually nationwide. During the 1970s, the channel retained a minority-oriented cultural profile while adding current-affairs discussion, arts coverage, sports and educational programming. The democratic transition gave it additional editorial room for debate and cultural expression. Programs such as La Clave, A fondo, Encuentros con las artes y las letras and Popgrama contributed to its reputation as a forum for political, literary, artistic and musical subjects. Regional TVE production centres, particularly in Catalonia and the Canary Islands, also supplied opt-outs and locally relevant material. The service was renamed TVE-2 in 1983 and continued to carry programming that did not fit the increasingly generalist identity of TVE’s first channel. The 1980s brought influential cultural and entertainment programs including La Edad de Oro, Metropoli, Con las manos en la masa and El tiempo es oro. It also carried significant live sports and special events, including European football competitions, basketball, handball and other events, although sports responsibilities later shifted elsewhere within RTVE. Following the arrival of nationwide private television in 1989 and 1990, TVE reorganized its channel strategy. TVE-2 adopted the name La 2 during the 1990s and was repositioned around alternative programming for a smaller but more culturally engaged audience. The slogan “La 2, para una inmensa minoría” expressed its deliberate focus on an audience described as a large minority rather than the mass market. The channel strengthened its documentary, science, news, cinema, literature and independent-programming portfolio. La 2 Noticias, Redes, Saber y ganar, Versión española and La noche temática became important parts of its identity, while Spanish and international series also appeared in its schedule. In June 2010, RTVE’s board formally repositioned La 2 as a strictly cultural channel and a reference point for creativity and talent. Sports programming moved to other RTVE services, particularly Teledeporte and La 1, while children’s programming was concentrated on Clan. The channel subsequently emphasized documentaries, cultural magazines, Spanish cinema, European cinema, arts, science, history and public-service content. Its audience share declined in the era of multichannel and commercial competition, but its specialized cultural role remained central to the RTVE portfolio. La 2 began its high-definition rollout in late 2017, first in Madrid and then across the rest of Spain, including later launches in Catalonia and the Canary Islands. Standard-definition distribution was discontinued on 11 February 2024, leaving the HD service as its broadcast format. History
La 2 originated in the expansion of Spanish television onto the UHF band. Test transmissions began in Madrid in January 1965, using a schedule of music and repeats from TVE’s first channel. Regular broadcasting followed on 15 November 1966. Salvador Pons Muñoz served as the first director, and the new service initially operated only for a few hours in the evening. Reception was concentrated in Madrid, Barcelona and Zaragoza, and many households required a UHF converter. TVE gradually used the channel to develop programming that was more specialized and experimental than the generalist offer of its first service. The channel’s early cultural mission was expressed through classical music, theatre, documentary production, educational material and alternative fiction. It also became a creative testing ground for filmmakers and television professionals connected with Spain’s official film school. Because the first channel absorbed much of the largest general-interest audience, the UHF service could cultivate a more selective editorial profile. During the 1970s, its limited schedule and incomplete national coverage constrained its reach, but its distinctive cultural identity became well established. The political and cultural opening associated with Spain’s transition to democracy strengthened the channel’s role as a space for debate and the arts. La Clave examined contemporary issues through discussion and related films, while A fondo interviewed figures from literature, science and the arts. Other programs covered emerging musical and artistic trends. TVE’s regional centres, particularly in Catalonia and the Canary Islands, developed production capacity and supplied local programming alongside national broadcasts. In 1983 the service adopted the name TVE-2 and received a new corporate identity. It continued to carry cultural programs but also broadcast major sports events, including European football, domestic league sports in areas without autonomous television and international competitions. The decade produced several programs that later became associated with Spanish television history, among them La Edad de Oro, Metropoli, Con las manos en la masa, El tiempo es oro and Estadio 2. The emergence of commercial television transformed TVE’s competitive environment. After Antena 3 and Tele 5 began nationwide broadcasting around 1990, TVE redefined its two-channel structure. TVE-2 became La 2 and deliberately targeted a smaller audience interested in alternative, cultural and educational programming. The “immensa minoría” positioning acknowledged that the channel would not normally compete for the largest share, while claiming value through editorial distinction. Documentary output was concentrated on La 2, and the channel launched or strengthened programs dealing with human-interest news, science, literature, film and history. The 1990s and early 2000s were particularly important for brand formation. La 2 Noticias offered a more socially and environmentally oriented news perspective than conventional bulletins. Redes popularized science and ideas, Saber y ganar became a durable quiz format, and Versión española created a regular space for Spanish cinema without advertising interruptions. La noche temática brought documentary packages associated with the European cultural television tradition. Children’s programming and selected foreign series also appeared on the channel, but its overall identity remained more specialized than that of La 1. In 2004, TVE adjusted the channel’s strategy again, moving some information responsibilities and experimenting with younger-oriented series and scheduling. In June 2010, RTVE made the cultural positioning explicit by designating La 2 a strictly cultural service. Sports and children’s programming were moved to other RTVE channels, allowing La 2 to concentrate on documentaries, cinema, arts, science, history, education and creative work. This specialization coincided with lower audience share, reflecting the growth of commercial channels and thematic digital services, but it reinforced La 2’s public-service rationale. The channel’s technical transition continued with high-definition broadcasting in 2017. The HD signal launched in stages across Spain, including separate rollouts in Catalonia and the Canary Islands. Standard-definition broadcasting ended in February 2024. In 2025, RTVE approved 2CAT, a planned Catalan-language service for Catalonia, and announced an effort to expand regional opt-outs and renew La 2’s national schedule. These initiatives show the channel adapting its public-service role to Spain’s multilingual structure while retaining its cultural and alternative programming mission.
