Overview
L. Brüggemann GmbH & Co. KG is an independent German family-owned chemical company headquartered in Heilbronn. Founded in 1868 by Louis Brüggemann as a molasses fermentation and alcohol distillery, the company has evolved into a specialty chemical producer active in three core areas: plastic additives, industrial chemicals and alcohol. It is part of the Brüggemann-Gruppe, which operates subsidiaries in Germany (Heilbronn and Lutherstadt Wittenberg), Italy (Piano di Coreglia), the United States and Hong Kong. The company positions itself as a partner for customized chemical solutions, focusing on niche applications with high innovation potential. Its plastic additives business, marketed under the Bruggolen brand, includes heat stabilizers, processing aids, light stabilizers and modifiers for engineering thermoplastics, particularly polyamide. The industrial chemicals segment comprises reducing agents (Brüggolit) and zinc derivatives. The alcohol division produces ethanol, including during the COVID-19 pandemic when demand for disinfectants surged. Brüggemann has a strong commitment to sustainability, having received the EcoVadis Platinum medal three times in a row, placing it in the top 1% of rated companies. It was an early signatory of the Antwerp Declaration for a European industrial deal. The company invests in research and development, with its own laboratories and application technology center at its Heilbronn site. Recent innovations include high-performance additives for polyolefin recycling (BRÜGGOLEN R8897 and R8899) and next-generation formaldehyde-free reducing agents. In 2017, after 149 years of family ownership, Ludwig Brüggemann sold his shares to the Ayles family, a Frankfurt-based entrepreneurial family active in the chemical industry. The company remains privately held and continues to operate as a family business under the Brüggemann-Gruppe umbrella.
History
L. Brüggemann GmbH & Co. KG was founded in 1868 by Louis Brüggemann (1825–1900) as a factory for the fermentation of molasses and the distillation of alcohol in Holzstraße in Heilbronn, Germany. The company grew strongly due to Bismarck's Reichsbranntweinsteuergesetz (Imperial Spirits Tax Act) of 1887. The original site became too small, and in 1900 the company moved to a new plant in Salzstraße, with Walter Brüggemann (1869–1958), the founder's son, taking over management. Towards the end of World War II, the headquarters was largely destroyed during air raids on Heilbronn in 1944. After the war, reconstruction took place. In 1950, the plant was expanded and the production of zinc oxides and carbonates began. In 1970, the production of plastic additives was added. In 1978, Ludwig Brüggemann took over the management of the company. Until 2017, he was the main owner of L. Brüggemann KG. International expansion began in 1990 with the opening of a sales office in the USA, followed by an office in Hong Kong in 2006. In 2000, a joint venture for the ethanol sector was founded with Royal Nedalco B.V., Netherlands, named Brüggemann Alcohol GmbH & Co. KG, owned 50% each by L. Brüggemann KG and Royal Nedalco B.V. In 2009, Brüggemann KG sold its shares in this joint venture to its partner Nedalco. The former joint venture was renamed Nedalco Alcohol GmbH & Co. KG, and Brüggemann founded a new company for its alcohol activities, BrüggemannAlcohol Heilbronn GmbH. In 2011, the Brüggemann Group began a cooperation with the energy supplier Zeag. The goal was environmental relief through energy generation from renewable raw materials, using ethanol as fuel. An energy center was built at the headquarters in Heilbronn for this project. A year later, the Brüggemann Group took over the ethanol production facilities in Lutherstadt Wittenberg from the Bundesmonopolverwaltung für Branntwein (Federal Monopoly Administration for Spirits) and founded BrüggemannAlcohol Wittenberg GmbH. In the same year, Brüggemann Services GmbH was founded, offering services in environmental, safety and chemical management. In 2012, the company set up a rubber development laboratory for data generation, product development and customer-specific tests in the zinc derivatives sector. In 2017, the then 78-year-old Ludwig Brüggemann sold his shares as part of a succession arrangement to the Frankfurt-based entrepreneurial family Ayles, who are active in the chemical industry. At the same time, he ended his activities as managing director and remained in an advisory capacity. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the Heilbronn and Wittenberg sites produced ethanol in continuous operation due to the high demand for alcohol for the production of disinfectants. In the same year, two new buildings were opened on the factory premises in Salzstraße. One building housed a production facility for polymer additives in powder and granule form, and the other a production facility for reducing agents including a spray dryer for microgranules, connected to the plant's own combined heat and power unit. In 2022, the Brüggemann Group acquired the company Auserpolimeri. Based in Piano di Coreglia, Italy, this company specializes in the grafting of polymers by reactive extrusion. Previously part of the Eigenmann & Veronelli Group, it was known in the technical polymers market for high-quality technical advice and continuous product development. As the Heilbronn coal power plant is to be shut down by 2035 at the latest, the Brüggemann Group built a new biomass power plant at its headquarters in addition to the existing combined heat and power unit. The plant was commissioned in 2023 and reduced CO2 emissions for steam production by 80%. The company structure includes subsidiaries in Heilbronn, Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Piano di Coreglia (Italy), the USA and Hong Kong. The Brüggemann Group operates in the fields of plastic additives, industrial chemicals and ethanol. The plastic additives business develops and produces high-performance additives for engineering thermoplastics and plastics with a focus on polyamide, marketed under the Bruggolen brand. These include heat, processing and light stabilizers, processing aids and modifiers. The plastic additives are used in injection molding and extrusion as well as in the packaging and fiber industries. The demand for polymers with high strength and resistance at high temperatures increased especially due to the shift to e-mobility. Among other things, the company developed Bruggolen TP-H1805, which can withstand temperatures above 200 degrees Celsius. For nucleation, Brüggemann developed Bruggolen P22 and TP-P1401 to improve dimensional stability. The company also developed a repair technology for the material recycling of polyamides, producing additives that compensate for damage and increase the performance of recyclates. Since the acquisition of Auserpolimeri, the Brüggemann Group also produces adhesion promoters, compatibilizers and impact modifiers. The industrial chemicals business segment comprises the product groups reducing agents and zinc derivatives. The sulfur-based reducing agents, marketed under the name Brüggolit, are used in various applications. The company continues to innovate, as evidenced by the launch of new high-performance additives for polyolefin recycling (BRÜGGOLEN R8897 and R8899) and next-generation formaldehyde-free reducing agents for emulsion polymerization.
