Overview

Lüthemühle is a historic hospitality and leisure complex in Nettetal-Breyell, in the district of Viersen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Its name refers to a former watermill on the river Nette, first documented in 1419 and once known as Vogelsangsmühle. Over the centuries the mill changed names several times — Luythenmühle (1559), Leuttenmuehlen (1632) and Leuthen Mühlen (1763) — and operated two undershot water wheels driving grain and oil mills. Milling ceased in 1945, and the historic buildings were subsequently converted into a country inn and riding stable. Today the Lüthemühle brand covers a Gasthaus (inn), hotel, event location and Reitstall (riding stable). The restaurant serves freshly prepared regional cuisine, while guests can celebrate in the Bierstube or the 'Alte Mühle' room. The hotel offers comfortable rooms with modern bathrooms, set within the surrounding nature park, making it a destination for short holidays and relaxation. The riding stable is described as a paradise for sport and hobby riders. Historic elements such as the 150-year-old entrance door and a terrace fountain built from the mill's old millstones preserve the site's long history. The business is privately operated and markets itself as a place for 'enjoying in the green and historic surroundings'. It recruits service staff for full-time, part-time and mini-job positions, indicating an active hospitality operation. The official website is luethemuehle.de.

History

The Lüthemühle is the oldest mill in the municipality of Breyell. It was first mentioned in a document in 1419, and in early times was also called Vogelsangsmühle. The name changed several times: 'Luythenmühle' (1559), 'Leuttenmuehlen' (1632) and 'Leuthen Mühlen' (1763). The mill was located on the river Nette at Lindenallee 50 in the Breyell district of Nettetal, at an elevation of about 40 m above sea level. Water maintenance is the responsibility of the Netteverband, based in Nettetal. In 1828 the mill was described as having two undershot water wheels in two channels. The first drove one grinding passage for wheat and two for rye; these three passages were interchangeable and could only be used individually. The second wheel drove an oil mill with one run. From November to May, in normal years, one grinding passage could operate daily from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., while in the remaining months, due to lack of water, hardly five hours a day were possible. The oil passage could normally be used from November to May only six hours daily, and in the other months only one to two days a week for four hours daily. The tax for the mill amounted to 12 talers. In 1851 the mill was completely renewed. At that time the two buildings with a narrow covered passage for the water wheels — now walled up — must have been built. In 1945 the grinding passages were shut down. A plan to install a 15/18 HP turbine failed due to excessive costs and low water pressure. The buildings are today widely known as a Gasthaus (inn) and Reiterhof (riding farm). The site retains historic elements such as a 150-year-old entrance door and a fountain on the terrace built from the mill's old millstones. Today the Lüthemühle operates as a hospitality complex with restaurant, hotel, event rooms (Bierstube and 'Alte Mühle') and a riding stable, set in the surrounding nature park.
