Overview

The Lüning-Gruppe is a German family-owned food retail and wholesale company headquartered in Rietberg, in the Kreis Gütersloh of North Rhine-Westphalia. Its origins date back to 12 April 1853, when master baker Max Lüning, then 25 years old, laid the foundation for the business. In its early years the enterprise combined a colonial goods and mail-order business, a bakery, an inn, and even transport services. In 1881 Heinrich Rieländer married Katharina, Max Lüning's daughter, and took over the management of the company, beginning the Rieländer family's long stewardship. Over the 20th century the company evolved from a regional bakery and inn into a substantial food wholesaler and retailer. Max Rieländer, son of Heinrich Rieländer and Katharina Lüning, took the helm in 1903 and focused on building the wholesale business, initially serving customers in the old county of Rietberg. After his early death in 1936, his son Heinz Rieländer continued the business alongside his mother. In 1951 the family founded Lüning Ladenbau Rietberg (shopfitting), and in the 1960s the company entered retail on its own account. In 1967 Heinz Rieländer opened the first self-service halls with non-food assortments, and in 1968 six Elli retail markets with food assortments, followed by additional locations. In 1975 the fifth generation, Wolfgang Rieländer, joined the management. After German reunification in 1989, Lüning expanded beyond North Rhine-Westphalia, opening non-food markets, shopfitting branches, and a non-food warehouse in the new federal states. A cooperation with the Edeka regional company Edeka Minden-Hannover, which took a 49% stake in the wholesale and retail divisions in 1989, provided new purchasing opportunities and conditions that strengthened the competitiveness of Lüning's own markets and wholesale operations. In 2001 the wholesale warehouse moved from Rietberg to the new Lüning logistics center in Langenberg-Benteler. In 2009 Philipp Rieländer, the sixth generation, joined the leadership, becoming managing director in 2013. He took over a trading company with over 1,600 employees, two logistics centers, 30 own markets, two shopfitting companies, and an in-house advertising agency and printing house. Today the Lüning-Gruppe operates through several business divisions: wholesale, retail, shopfitting, and advertising. The wholesale division supplies food retail, petrol stations, and kiosks with food. The retail division comprises 38 self-operated markets under the banners "Elli-Markt" (13), "EDEKA center LÜNING" (4), "EDEKA LÜNING" (5), and "sb LÜNING" (16). The shopfitting division consists of "LÜNING Ladenbau" and "Contour Ladenbau." The group is a cooperative partner of EDEKA, and its corporate headquarters is the Rieländer Handels GmbH. The company has received several awards for family-friendliness and regional engagement, including recognition from the Bertelsmann Stiftung and the "Regional-Star" seal from Lebensmittel Praxis.

History

The Lüning-Gruppe traces its origins to 12 April 1853, when master baker Max Lüning, aged 25, founded the business that would become today's group. In its early decades the enterprise operated a colonial goods and mail-order business, a bakery, an inn, and transport services. On 19 July 1881, Heinrich Rieländer married Katharina, Max Lüning's daughter, and from that year led the company, initiating the Rieländer family's involvement. In 1903, Max Rieländer, son of Heinrich Rieländer and Katharina Lüning, took the helm. While his father managed the inn and bakery, Max focused on building the wholesale business, steadily expanding his customer base, initially in the old county of Rietberg. He died in 1936 at only 54 years of age. His son Heinz Rieländer then continued the business together with his mother; at that time the company employed 26 people. The family preserved the business through the war years. After the war, the wholesale business continued to grow. In 1951 the family founded Lüning Ladenbau Rietberg (shopfitting), and in the 1960s the company entered retail on its own account. In 1967 Heinz Rieländer opened the first self-service halls with non-food assortments, and in 1968 six Elli retail markets with food assortments, alongside a store in Rietberg and additional locations in Rhoden, Steinhagen, Lippstadt, Korbach, and Lütgendortmund, as well as an A&O market east in Schloss Neuhaus. In 1975 the fifth generation took over at the top when Wolfgang Rieländer joined the management. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Lüning expanded for the first time into retail outside North Rhine-Westphalia, opening several non-food markets, shopfitting branches, and a non-food warehouse in the new federal states. Cooperation with the Edeka regional company Edeka Minden-Hannover, which acquired a 49% stake in the wholesale and retail divisions in 1989, brought new purchasing opportunities and conditions that strengthened the competitiveness of Lüning's own markets and wholesale operations. In 2001 the wholesale warehouse moved from Rietberg to the new Lüning logistics center in Langenberg-Benteler. In 2009 Philipp Rieländer, the sixth generation, joined the leadership of the Lüning-Gruppe, and in 2013 he became managing director, taking over from his father Wolfgang Rieländer a trading company with over 1,600 employees, two logistics centers, 30 own markets, two shopfitting companies, and an in-house advertising agency and printing house. In 2014 the Lüning logistics center was expanded with a high-bay warehouse. In 2015 Lüning Ladenbau moved from Rietberg to Langenberg-Benteler, opposite the Lüning logistics center on the B55. At the same time the logistics center was enlarged by the new external warehouse "Benteler Ost," which also moved into the new halls. The company has received several awards, including in 2011 winning the "Familie gewinnt" competition of the Bertelsmann Stiftung and the Kreis Gütersloh (large enterprise category), a special prize in 2013 for long-standing and sustainable commitment to better work-life balance, the "familienfreundlicher Arbeitgeber" seal from the Bertelsmann Stiftung in 2015, the "Regional-Star" seal from Lebensmittel Praxis in 2017, and the "Top-Karrierechancen" seal from Focus Money in 2018.
