Overview
Brockensammlung Lübeck e.V. is a registered non-profit association (gemeinnützig anerkannter Verein) based in Lübeck, Germany, active in the field of welfare and social care. It runs one of the oldest second-hand sales outlets in Lübeck, a collection and resale point for donated furniture, household goods, clothing and books, located in a heritage-listed former gymnasium near Lübeck's main railway station. The association is a member of the Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband Schleswig-Holstein, part of the umbrella organisation Der Paritätische Wohlfahrtsverband. The organisation traces its origins to the Brockensammlung movement founded in Bethel (Bielefeld) in 1890/1891 on the initiative of Friedrich von Bodelschwingh the Elder and Karl Schnitger, inspired by the biblical passage John 6:12 that no fragments should be lost but usable goods should be reused. The Gemeinnützige Brockensammlung in Lübeck was established in April 1913 by Lübeck citizens, with its first collection reported on 15 March 1913. It collected unused household items, furniture, clothing, footwear, toys, scrap iron, non-ferrous metals, bottles, paper and rags from Lübeck households and passed usable goods on to people living in poverty. After operating from several locations — Schildstraße, the Salzspeicher on the Obertrave (1916–1932) and Töpferweg until activities ceased in 1942 during the Second World War — the association was re-founded on 6 February 1951 by Henny Drückhammer and the Lübecker Arbeiterwohlfahrt. It subsequently occupied premises at Konstinplatz, Holstentorplatz, Kanalstraße and Kleine Burgstraße before moving in 2010 to a heritage-listed former gymnasium at Steinrader Weg near the main station, renovated from May 2010 with support from the Possehl-Stiftung and the Gemeinnützige Sparkassenstiftung zu Lübeck. Today the Brockensammlung continues its charitable mission: it accepts donations of used furniture, household goods and clothing, offers free collection of donations, issues donation receipts on request, and sells goods at affordable prices to people in need. It also engages in refugee assistance (Flüchtlingshilfe). The association is a small, locally rooted welfare organisation rather than a commercial retail chain, but it operates a continuous second-hand retail activity and is one of Lübeck's oldest such shops.
History
The Brockensammlung Lübeck e.V. is a non-profit association in Lübeck, Germany, engaged in welfare and social care. It is a member of the Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband Schleswig-Holstein, which in turn belongs to the umbrella organisation Der Paritätische Wohlfahrtsverband, and it maintains a collection point for well-preserved furniture, household goods, clothing and books in a heritage-listed former gymnasium near Lübeck's main railway station. The idea behind the Brockensammlung originated with Friedrich von Bodelschwingh the Elder and Karl Schnitger, who in 1890/1891 established the first Brockensammlung in Bethel (Bielefeld). The name and concept refer to the biblical verse John 6:12, according to which no fragments should be lost but usable goods should be reused. In April 1913 the Gemeinnützige Brockensammlung was founded in Lübeck by local citizens, specifically from the Verein zur Fürsorge für entlassene Strafgefangene und sittlich Verwahrloste (association for the care of released prisoners and morally neglected persons) and the Lübecker Frauengruppe des Deutschen Vereins gegen den Mißbrauch geistiger Getränke (Lübeck women's group of the German association against the abuse of alcoholic beverages). Its purpose was to collect unused items stored in cellars and attics — household goods, furniture, clothing, footwear, toys, scrap iron, non-ferrous metals, bottles, paper and rags — and to refurbish usable items to supply people living in poverty. The first collection took place on 15 March 1913, as reported by the Lübecker Volksbote. Initially the Brockensammlung was housed at Schildstraße 10, then from 1916 to 1932 in the Lübeck Salzspeicher on the Obertrave. Until activities ceased in 1942 during the Second World War, the association was located at Töpferweg 20. After the war, the association was re-founded on 6 February 1951 by interested parties around Henny Drückhammer and the Lübecker Arbeiterwohlfahrt. Henny Drückhammer had already served as managing director of the Gemeinnützige Brockensammlung from 1916 to 1942. The first post-war premises were a barrack at Konstinplatz, then a barrack at Holstentorplatz, followed by a former coal dealership on Kanalstraße. Later the association occupied rooms in the Kranen-Konvent in Kleine Burgstraße. When those rooms were needed for the expansion of the Ernestinenschule cafeteria, the Brockensammlung moved in 2010 to a heritage-listed former gymnasium at Steinrader Weg, in the immediate vicinity of Lübeck's main railway station. The gymnasium had been unused for ten years and was renovated for this purpose from May 2010. The Possehl-Stiftung and the Gemeinnützige Sparkassenstiftung zu Lübeck contributed to the costs. Today the association continues its charitable work: it accepts donations of used furniture, household goods and clothing, offers free collection of donations, issues donation receipts on request, and sells goods at affordable prices to people in need. It also provides refugee assistance. The Brockensammlung Lübeck e.V. remains a locally rooted welfare organisation and one of the oldest second-hand shops in Lübeck.
