Overview

The Länta-Hütte is a mountain hut of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC), operated by its Sektion Bodan, located at 2,090 metres above sea level in the upper Vals Valley (Länta) in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. It stands between rock blocks near the Läntagletscher and the Rheinwaldhorn, above the Valser Rhein and close to the Zervreilasee. The hut is a classic base for alpine activities in the Adula Alps, offering 30 sleeping places in three large dormitories, half-board with breakfast and a four-course dinner, and a mandatory hut sleeping bag. It is open year-round but staffed from late March to early May for ski touring and from late June to mid-October for hiking, mountaineering and climbing. The hut is a well-known reference point in the Swiss sport climbing scene, with numerous climbing routes and climbing gardens nearby. It is reachable on foot from Zervreila in about 2.5 to 3 hours. The Länta-Hütte is a brand of the SAC, representing a tradition of alpine hospitality and mountain safety. Its history dates back to 1913, when the Sektion Bodan built a shelter on the site of an old sheep alp. It was rebuilt in 1968 after avalanche damage and extensively renovated in 2005. In June 2019 a rockfall severely damaged the unstaffed hut, forcing closure; after blasting unstable rock and adding a protective dam, it reopened in March 2020. The hut is a listed SAC facility and a key infrastructure for tourism in the Vals Valley, also offering discounted entry to the Therme Vals for overnight guests.

History

The Länta-Hütte stands on the site of a former sheep alp of the same name, which was managed for centuries by Ticino herders. In 1913, the Sektion Bodan of the Swiss Alpine Club built a shelter hut there. The hut was rebuilt in 1968 after avalanche damage and extensively renovated in 2005; at that time, a deliberate decision was made not to expand it. In mid-June 2019, the unstaffed hut was severely damaged by a rockfall and remained closed. After blasting further unstable rock masses, the hut was repaired and renovated and provided with an additional protective dam on the slope side. It reopened in March 2020. The hut is always open but staffed from late March to early May (ski tours) and from late June to mid-October (hiking, mountaineering, climbing). It serves as a starting point for ski and high tours to surrounding peaks such as Rheinwaldhorn, Güferhorn and Grauhorn, for pass hikes into Ticino (Passo Soreda) and to Vals (Furggelti), and for climbing tours (Zervreilahorn). Neighboring huts include Zapporthütte, Motterasciohütte, Adulahütte SAC, Adulahütte UTOE and Terrihütte. The Länta valley is rich in traces of old herding culture, with connections over the Soreda and Fornei passes to the neighboring Valle di Blenio and over the Fuorcla Darlun to Val Lumnezia. The Läntalücke has more alpinistic significance due to its glaciated north side. The valley, a classic glacial trough and archaic herding world, fascinated early Alpine travelers and entered alpine literature early on.
