Overview
Kyoto Kawaramachi Garden is a commercial shopping facility located in the Shijo-Kawaramachi district of Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto, Japan. It is operated by Sumitomo Realty & Development Co., Ltd. and occupies the lower floors of the Kyoto Sumitomo Building (also known as Sumitomo Realty Kyoto Building), a high-rise completed on September 30, 1976. The building sits at the southeast corner of the Shijo-Kawaramachi intersection, and its basement level is directly connected to Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station, the terminal of the Hankyu Kyoto Main Line. The facility opened on May 12, 2021, after a delay from its originally announced April 15, 2021 opening date due to the COVID-19 state of emergency declared by Kyoto Prefecture. It replaced the former Kyoto Marui department store, which had operated floors B1 through 6 from April 27, 2011, until May 12, 2020. Prior to that, the commercial space was occupied by Shijo-Kawaramachi Hankyu from October 15, 1976, to August 22, 2010. The 7th and 8th floors, which house restaurants, were operated as Mosaic Dining Shijo-Kawaramachi by Hankyu Commercial Development from March 18, 2005, until January 2015, and have been managed by Sumitomo Realty since July 12, 2017. Kyoto Kawaramachi Garden is anchored by the electronics retailer Edion on its basement floor and features a mix of shops, food halls, and service tenants. The facility hosts events and promotions, including a 50th anniversary celebration for the Kyoto Sumitomo Building in 2026. It is the only building that Sumitomo Realty & Development has owned since its founding. The official website provides information on shops, food halls, events, and access.
History
The commercial facility now known as Kyoto Kawaramachi Garden is housed in the Kyoto Sumitomo Building, which was completed on September 30, 1976, replacing an earlier Kyoto Sumitomo Building constructed in 1938. The building is located at the southeast corner of the Shijo-Kawaramachi intersection in Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto, and its basement level is directly connected to Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station on the Hankyu Kyoto Main Line. It is the only building that Sumitomo Realty & Development has owned since its founding. From October 15, 1976, to August 22, 2010, the commercial space was operated as Shijo-Kawaramachi Hankyu, a department store. Following its closure, the space was renovated and reopened on April 27, 2011, as Kyoto Marui, which operated floors B1 through 6 until May 12, 2020. Meanwhile, the 7th and 8th floors, which house restaurants, were operated as Mosaic Dining Shijo-Kawaramachi by Hankyu Commercial Development from March 18, 2005, until January 2015. Since July 12, 2017, Sumitomo Realty has managed those floors. After Kyoto Marui closed in May 2020, Sumitomo Realty announced plans for a new commercial facility, Kyoto Kawaramachi Garden, scheduled to open on April 15, 2021. However, due to the COVID-19 state of emergency declared by Kyoto Prefecture, the opening was postponed, and the facility finally opened on May 12, 2021. The facility is anchored by the electronics retailer Edion on its basement floor and includes a variety of shops, a food hall, and restaurants. It hosts events and promotions, such as the 50th anniversary celebration of the Kyoto Sumitomo Building in 2026.
