Overview

Kyoritsu Seiyaku Corporation is a Japanese animal-health company headquartered in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. Its stated mission is "creating the path forward for animals and people," and it operates across two main business fields: companion animals (dogs and cats) and livestock/aquaculture. The company supplies veterinary pharmaceuticals, vaccines, therapeutic diets, supplements, care products, feed and medical devices, and it also provides services such as microchip registration support, HACCP hygiene-management support and animal-medical platforms. The company was founded in 1955 in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, as Kyoritsu Shoji Co., Ltd. (共立商事株式会社). In its early years it acted as a bridge between overseas veterinary medicine and Japan, importing the first canine distemper vaccine into Japan from the Netherlands in 1955. It went on to sell vaccines and veterinary pharmaceuticals, and later moved into in-house development and manufacturing. In 2001 it changed its name to Kyoritsu Seiyaku Corporation. It has since integrated affiliated manufacturing companies and expanded its product range. Kyoritsu Seiyaku's companion-animal business covers diagnosis, prevention, treatment and daily care for dogs and cats. Its livestock/aquaculture business provides pharmaceuticals and feed and supports hygiene management to contribute to the safety and security of Japanese food. The company states that it handles approximately 2,000 items across vaccines, veterinary drugs, therapeutic diets, supplements, nursing-care products, feed and medical devices. It also developed Japan's first aquaculture vaccine for farmed fish such as yellowtail and red sea bream. The company operates research and manufacturing sites including the Advanced Technology Development Center and Tsukuba Plant, the Saitama Plant and the Hiroshima Plant. It collaborates with partners such as Royal Canin (therapeutic diet online sales), Toray, Suntory and others, and it participates in public veterinary programs including the Japan Veterinary Medical Association microchip registration program. Kyoritsu Seiyaku is not listed on a stock exchange and is not known to be a subsidiary of a larger listed group.

History

Kyoritsu Seiyaku traces its origins to 1955, when Kyoritsu Shoji Co., Ltd. (共立商事株式会社) was established in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, at what is still the company's headquarters location. At that time, Japanese veterinary medicine lagged behind Europe and the United States in knowledge and technology. The company imported the first canine distemper vaccine into Japan from the Netherlands in 1955, becoming a bridge between overseas and Japanese veterinary medicine. It went on to sell high-quality vaccines and veterinary pharmaceuticals, and it addressed veterinary challenges not only for dogs and cats but also for livestock animal infectious diseases. In 1961 the company began selling Esbilac Powder, a milk replacer for dogs and cats. In 1968 the Tsukuba Central Research Institute was completed. In 1969 it began manufacturing Newcastle disease vaccine. In 1972 it established Isop Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (イソップ薬品株式会社), which later became San-Ai-Bis Co., Ltd. (サンアイビス株式会社). From the 1980s onward, as living standards stabilized, more people kept pets and the number of veterinarians increased greatly. Diversification of lifestyles and diets also made food safety and security a social concern. Responding to these needs, the company moved beyond importing and selling pharmaceuticals into full-scale in-house development and manufacturing. It built a multi-product lineup for disease prevention, treatment and infection control, and actively disseminated information on animal health and medicine. The company describes its role in establishing the "pets are family" culture in Japan and in helping create today's environment in which Japanese livestock and fishery products are considered safe, secure, high-quality and delicious. Key developments in the growth period include: 1986 launch of Paulvac MD cvi (Marek's disease frozen live vaccine); 1989 business alliance with Master Foods Co., Ltd. (which came under Royal Canin in 2002); 1993 business alliance with Toray Industries, Inc.; 1994 launch of Intercat, the world's first interferon preparation for dogs and cats; 1995 major sponsorship of the World Veterinary Congress in Yokohama; 1997 establishment of T-Cell Research Institute Co., Ltd. and launch of Master Foods' complete nutritional food Vets Plan; and 1999 participation in the Japan Veterinary Medical Association's microchip registration program and launch of Suvaxyn Aujeszky (swine Aujeszky's disease live vaccine). From the 2000s onward, Japan's population plateaued and the number of pets and livestock/aquaculture animals kept began to decline. At the same time, needs diversified and individualized further: aging of pets, stricter hygiene management in livestock/aquaculture, and efficiency improvements at animal hospitals and livestock/aquaculture businesses. In the pet field, the company began promoting microchips, supporting rehoming of rescued dogs and cats, and developing an animal-medical platform with electronic medical records. In the livestock/aquaculture field, it began supporting the introduction of HACCP hygiene management ahead of the industry. Major events in this period include: 2001 name change from Kyoritsu Shoji Co., Ltd. to Kyoritsu Seiyaku Corporation; 2002 acquisition of 100% of Denka Pharmaceutical shares from Denki Kagaku Kogyo K.K., renaming of the Tsukuba Central Research Institute to the Advanced Technology Development Center, and start of HACCP introduction support; 2003 name change of Denka Pharmaceutical to Kawasaki Pharmaceutical and acquisition of 100% of Mitaka Pharmaceutical shares from Asahi Kasei Pharma and Intervet Holding B.V.; 2004 integration of Kawasaki Pharmaceutical and Mitaka Pharmaceutical to establish Kawasaki Mitaka Pharmaceutical; 2006 business alliance with Suntory and launch of Pet Health Sesamin E (animal health supplement); 2007 participation in the Kochi Prefecture industry-academia-government joint research project and Japan Aqua Space; 2009 name change of Kawasaki Mitaka Pharmaceutical to Kawasaki Pharmaceutical and launch of Mastritin (intramammary anti-inflammatory); 2010 integration with Kawasaki Pharmaceutical and launch of Adrestan (treatment for hyperadrenocorticism); 2012 relocation of headquarters to Kudan-kita 1-11-5, Chiyoda-ku, integration with New Epolion Co., Ltd., and launch of Mimipure (dog otitis externa treatment); 2013 launch of chicken Salmonella inactivated trivalent vaccine KS and Johne's disease real-time PCR diagnostic kit, and support for rescued dogs and cats. The company continues to operate in the 2020s with a mission of "creating the path forward for animals and people," offering products and services in both companion-animal and livestock/aquaculture fields.
